History Earliest Willys Racecars

There is something that I like about the early style Willys look. Truth be known some of these might just be low buck builds or a stock body that was found a little later and was being built into a race car. I had never seen that picture of the Mathiews Garage car. It's nice to see some of these pictures of the little known cars.

I'm not sure if the cars in primer could have been Mike Kuhl but I believe that the blue one was.

This also looks like the same car.

I just happend to be thumbing throught some of my old copies of Hot Rod and stumbled upon a picture of of this one. It was raced by a guy named Daniel Fink out of Denver it ran a '61 283 and ran in B/Gas.

 

This one was built later but still has the early look. It's the best name that I have ever heard for a 37-8 Willys with the Original front end. The Praying Mantis

Can you take some pictures or scan the magazine and post more on the Daniel Fink car? He was a friend of my dads he must of got that one after dad moved away or maybe it's the same car with a different paint job. Also Notice the Willys Emblem on the hood, that is a 40 only piece. Maybe it's the same car with a different front end and paint job. Notice Cal Custom lettering on the front fender, probably one of their fiberglass front ends. Dad painted his car the same color as Dan Fink.

I don't think i have any more on the car but this is the cover of the issue it's in. Maybe you can find a copy on Ebay.

 

Here are a couple of pictures of dad's coupe. It was built to gass class rules in the 60s from a stock body that he flat towed from North Dakota to Texas. It ran a 327 with a Muncie 4 speed and for a while had a Rochester fuel injection and ran good with it. They would shift it at 7200 rpm. I think that it had a Spaulding flamethrower and was built by my dad and uncle and had the 10% setback. It only ran on the street when dad had it.

Yes it floods a lot where we are from but that's another advantage to the nosebleed stance

 

The Dwarfs car club ran a Hudson six powered Willys in F/Gas at Pomona in '62 and it looks like the Grist Bros. car had just been choped.

These are some of the regionally famous cars that didn't make the big time on the national scene. I had seen pictures but had no idea who they were. Keep up the good work

1958 is pretty early for a Willys drag car.
