I am working on my 59 Olds Dynamic 2 door hardtop. Doing lower rocker rust repair, which is quite a lot of work as this car spent about 5 years in Chicago before it got to Casa Grande Arizona where I picked it up. Currently the entire car is down to bare metal. Passenger side rockers are rebuilt, inside and out. Patch panels were hand made for the corners of the wheel wells and rear lower fenders. The rear passenger side wheel well was gone I mean gone. So I picked up a Chevy rear section and fabd that in. Anyway as I am going through this I have several ideas. Im thinking early 60s custom, but not exactly what finally fell out in the mid sixties (I dont want skinny whites). What I do want to do is: Wide whites on 5 spokes (although they will not be Torques or Americans, but will be the magnesium look) Maybe Bellflower tips at the rear (cant decide if I want to do slash cut on the end or not) Customize the grill with drawer pulls (black out the original grill) Headlight treatment thought of putting in Pontiac headlights of similar year and modifying the brow above the light to match the center of the hood. I think the front of 59 Olds is Ugly. Wheel Chop the steering wheel is going to be modified, but I am not giving that away just yet. Hopefully going to send it over to Australia to PearlCraft. The Hood will be shaved of the original 88 chrome and the sights are removed and the holes filled on the fenders. Tell me what you think. And dont hold back comments. Tell me if you think Im an idiot or if you like it. My main question right now is on the Bellflower tips..the original plan was to do side pipes again, but I have kids and dont want them to get hurt. I have 5 victims already from the old pipes. Any photoshoppers out there please have a go at it if you like.
First of all, mag wheels came about at a time that wide-whites were phasing out. I rarely like the look of both of them together - but you did ask for opinions. I would reconsider the 5-spokes, I think a chrome steel wheel or wires would look a little better. As for whitewalls, don't go with the really wide ones, they were going away pretty early in the 60s. Take a look at how "fashionably thin" the whitewalls were getting by 1959 on Larry Watson's '59 Cad. (image courtesy Rikster) The rest of it sounds really cool!
