Early Caddy engine info 331?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Fox Valley Hot Rods, Oct 15, 2006.

  1. Hey guys,

I've always been a flathead Ford guy, but just picked up a few early Caddy engines. Not sure what year and so on. Is there a good Caddy specific web site that could head me in the right direction for info? I'd like to find out exactly what I have, what to do with it and where to get parts.

I did a quick search on the HAMB and found some good info, but not any that would help me ID what I have.

    Any help would be great.

on the back of the block, is it short or does it stick out about 8 inches? do the valve covers have script, or block letters? does it havea twist on oil filter or a remote/non? does it have a 2br carb, or a 4br carb? is the 4 br big or small?

VIN number is located on front passenger side of block deck. This should help you zero in on what you have.

  11. Hi guys,

Thanks for the info. Rockers are script. Block extends out back about 8 inches or so. Some of the paper work attached to the misc. parts says 53-54 Caddy. I have 2 engines, only need one if someone is interested in the extra parts??? Also have 2 intakes, one is a 2bbl and the other is a 4bbl.

So it looks like I have a mid 50's 331?

their are a few tell tale things associated with the early cad's, the 49 has a 3/8" pipe for a dip stick tube that threads into the oil pan, the 51's have a tube in the block. for several years the ser. no. always started with the year. the head casting for 54 is 1461727, 53 is 1459736, 55 is 1462611, 49 through 52, 1454022,1456439 1458612, not necessarly in that order, 49 cams don't interchange, olds rocket bellhousings and 145 tooth flywneels fit. becareful with the push rods they go a certian way depending on the year. good luck, one of the smoothest ever built........ancientiron
