"Eddie Hill of Wichita Falls, Texas enjoyed two colorful careers in drag racing. His first race car began in the late ’50s as a stubby, homemade dragster with a single Pontiac V8. But by 1962, the rig had sprouted a second engine, twin GMC superchargers, and dualie-style rear slicks, as shown here. Hill then turned his attention to boats, but returned to land-based drag racing in the ’80s to record the first four-second elapsed time in history."

It was as fast as it was beautiful, a high-performance sculpture of sorts that earned Best Engineered honors the 1958 NHRA Nationals as well as a cover kudos on the January 1959 Hot Rod.

    Hello,

We all know how powerful a 671 supercharger can be. Add one to a complete “blower spec” motor and some wonderful results can appear.

Impressed with all of the Chrisman Brothers hot rod/drag race builds, this version, the Hustler 2 was a stand out record setting FED. It made believers out of everyone. The car, powered by a blown 392-cid Chrysler engine stroked out to 454 inches, recorded the sport's first 180-mph run with a 181. in the quarter mile on Feb 15 1959.

“a sleek new machine called the Hustler emerged from Chrisman and Sons Garage It appeared on the Jan. 1959 cover of HRM, and a month later scorched the strip on the back straightaway of Riverside Raceway at 181.81 mph, making art the first drag racer to exceed 180 mph.”

We saw the latest version of the Hustler at the time, in the December Riverside Raceway drag race in 1959. The accolades were all correct. A fast, sleek race car with numbers to back up any records.

But, as history provides us with information, they were too happy going 181 mph in the Hustler 2.
