I was doing a little research, and it appears you can use any 56-64 ford 12V generator as a Swap for the 6V units on the late flatheads, I think you have to drill a hole and that is about it, add the matching regulator. Can these generators (same year range) be used on an early flathead? Mine is a 36. Thank You! James
I used the barrel and field coils from a 57 gennie, together with the 47 end plates and armature. All fit together, no problem.
Ya know, if the cut - out contact in the reg is stuffed, you can use a dirty big diode out of an alternator from a bus. I've done it years ago on some vintage cars...once the reg cover is on, no one would know. Safer than relying on an old contactor. Can't remember the alternator model, but they were oil filled, gear driven, and sat in the vee of big detroit diesel V8's in tour coaches. Great big ****ers. over 200 AMP jobs. edit: http://www.delcoremy.com/Alternator/Models/50-DN-Heavy-Duty-Transit-Coach-Alternator.aspx
You will need to change the end caps, so it mounts right, but i think i heard something about doing that, also there are a bunch of different flathead generator bodies, so you will probably need a later generator too
The front plate on the 56-64 would need the mounting ear cut off or replace with the 51 front plate. The 51 mounts in a saddle which has a pin which goes into a locating hole in the main body. You would have to drill an equivalent hole in the 56-64 body.
A true 36 generator used a cut out mounted on top of the generator with 3 brushes. I'm not sure that it will work with the 12 body and field windings. Bruce probably knows. Wow has it really been 6 years since I did this? Generator conversion The only thing that is really changed is the housing and field windings.
