I'm trying to go through my brakes while wating for my drivers front fender to come back from paint.

here is the lowdown on what I have

    42-46 Ford front brakes drum
    1957 chevy rear drum brakes
Ch***is Eng brake lever mounted in the original postion under the floor on the x member and 67 mustang drum/drum mastercylinder
10lb residual pressure valves front and back

trying to adjust the ford brakes is a pain, but i think you spin the wheel and turn one cam til she dont spin and back off til it just spins and repeat.

the rear were adjusted til they would not spin and then given 7 clicks to free them up.

Watching the front got me thinking that there was a problem with something so I took the drum off.

With the pedal pushed, only the forward most drum moved. i took the wheel cylinder off and cleaned it all inside as there was gunk in it,

Put it back together and again the forward most drum moves wth the pedal, unless I hold the forward shoe and then the trialer will move.

I have the wheel cylinder positioned so that the larger part is forward as well, and the smaller chamber is facing the rear.

Is this how they work or do I have a problem

Sounds about right to me.. I don't have much experience with those particular brakes, did you say the wheel cyl has a larger plunger thingy in the front than the rear? It would make sense that it would move first since there is more force than the smaller side.. Right? Either way, as long as the rear shoe moves when the front is held in place then all is well because they will both be alive in the drum.

the larger bore of the wheel cylinder moves first.
it must be that the forward shoe moves and then the fluids psushes the rear shoe
