Early Ford Econoline Sraight Axle.. Can I use it??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by desertratrodder, Dec 16, 2003.

  1. Now that I am going to redo the frame on the 33 Chrysler, I've been looking for parts I already have, before I go shopping. I've got a early Falcon/ Econoline van at my yard with a straight axle front end. Is it something to consider or of no practical use?

don't the springs mount under the frame and on top of the axle?

might end up riding like a truck and looking like a gasser.

not that there's anything wrong with that!

  3. No, you DON'T wanna use it, you wanna crate it up and send it to PLYMOUTH, MI in care of me, and I will "dispose" of it properly.

    Anything to help. [IMG]

  4. No ya can't use it, I'm gonna use it.[IMG]
You would probably have to tweek it but I can't see why you couldn't use it.
You gonna use the econoline springs. ? How are you width wise. Will everything line up?
Just questions you should ask when you're figuring it out.
Maybe you can trade it for something that will work better.

    Those are great for Gassers

  6. i have that same set up in my ranchero, works great

  7. I was looking at it again, and the springs do run on the top of the axle... I dont really want it riding high. Does anybody make a kit to run them on the bottom? Just trying to go with the free stuff first, if it doesnt work, I will be willing to trade for something that will. [IMG] Seems that a few would want it. I'm open to any ideas, I havent built the frame yet. I'm going for a more traditional fenderless rod.

kinda hard to do with a home made frame and Econoline axle but,

you could build the frame narrower than the springs and mount them outside the rails.

I would think that it would be way to wide for something like an old rod. You did say it would be fenderless though. An F-1 axle would be a better width for something like that. There are ways to mount an axle above the leafs. I think Kerry posted pictuers of his set up....

I'm gunna try to post yet another embarasingly dark and crusty cluttered pic of my crappy crapper, but it does show (if you can make it out) the home did spring mounts outside the frame rails.

not exactly a show winner but, it gets the job done [IMG]

  15. If anyone was wondering, I'm making a new frame because this one has a GM front sub, and doesnt fit the body. I want to go to a straight axle.
