I have two prewar Fords that are missing their original horn rods and****ociated switches (both have non-functional horn*****ons on the steering wheels, and functional horn*****ons mounted elsewhere). I'd rather have the steering wheel*****ons working, but haven't tracked down the necessary rod, etc. Looks like a hassle to install, too.

I recently saw an article on a car with a '40 wheel, and the photo caption said something about the "diode horn switch". Can somebody tell me anything about such a switch?

The connection for the horn*****on is at the base of the steering column at the same area all the headlight and tail light connections are attached. Pressing the horn switch at the steering wheel will ground the circuit with the rod that goes into the switch at the base of the column and allows the horn to work. Exactly what else do you need to know and I may get more specific.

Petjoe is right. It sounds like you need to get a horn rod.

There was an article in American rodder about making it work w/o using the horn rod (I think). I think primarily for folks who swap in a different steering box, so can't use the original spider/switch****embly and/or the sector shaft isn't rifle drilled for the horn wire.

I asked about it on here a while ago, but no one seemed to have the article. I haven't a clue which issue it was in, but I think it was entitled "retro tech" - here's a pic of it:

Petejoe and manyolkars, thanks, I understand the horn rod but was hoping to find another solution.

Flat Ernie, I think that's what I'm looking for. I'll look through my old AmRodders. Thanks much.

If you find the article, I'd be interested in a copy. I want to put the original column back in my '36 and still make the horn work.

Here is a website with a rod magazine index of tech articles and features. Covers most of the rod magazines. www.hotrodindex.150m.com I have used this several times and even made up a booklet for my own use from it. I have most of the old mags, so if you need an article and can't find it give me a shout and I will scan it for you. Pat.
