I looked in the Tech section and was not able to find anything. I am a first time builder and I need some help with my brake setup. I have a wide five set up and would like to stay with it. I need all the guts for my brakes. The only thing I have are the drums, backing plates and hubs. They are early ford juice(40's ?). Any recommendations? What parts to buy, where to buy them? Any help would be great! Thanks Guys. Warren
If the backing plates are for hydraulic brakes then you probably have a set for 39-41 Ford car and pickup. Joblot Automotive in Queens,Long Island, NY is one good source for brake parts. Little Dearborn Parts in Minneapolis MN is another.
You can buy all the replacement parts from several dealers like Macs, Joblot ect. 40 on drums are 5 on 5 1/2. You didn't mention if you have 36 wide 5, if you do, you need 37-39 front drums, 36 front bearings are 1" deeper. All wide 5 rear drums will work with 40-48 backing plates. You will need an adapter ring that will shim the front hub/backing plate, also elongate the plate mounting holes a bit for bolt alingment. If I missed something, someone will chime in. Mike
Not to hijack the thread, just so that I understand the replies..If I want to use 37-39 wide five drums & hydraulic brakes..I use 39-41 car/truck backing plates and brake hdwe (shoes ,springs, cylinders, etc)?? I'm considering a wide-five wheel setup on my next project
You need to determine what spindles you have before you go too much further. The 37-41 spindles will have "78-" cast into them somewhere and use a flat top king pin. The 35-36 spindles have "48-" cast into them and use a kingpin with a forged steel ball with an open face to the inside on them. The bearings for front hubs on all 28-48 P***enger Cars and Pickups are the same, inner and outer, there is a seal change in 35-up to a conventional seal from a slinger type seal. The roller bearings for rear hubs from 37-48 are the same and use the same seals. The spindle stub axles are longer on the 28-36 p***enger car and pickup spindles and the spindle flange uses a smaller bolt pattern to mount the backing plates. This necessitates an adapter kit consisting of a bearing spacer for each spindle and a brake backing plate centering ring for each plate. The holes in the hydraulic plates need to be elongated to reach the smaller bolt pattern holes. And you're there.
