  1. Hey fellas,

Have this trans that came out of a ‘39 Mercury. It has a 68 number on the inside of the shift housing, the shift fork is a smidge under 3” (looks like 2 3/4”?) and does not have a part number on it.. and the housing doesn’t have any detent plugs which the van pelt pics do. I also cannot see any brass synchro rings. It has a ‘38 / ‘39 swan shifter on it.

What can you guys tell me about this trans? Appreciate any info.

  2. That mainshaft with the wide helical teeth is like the one I have in an early '36 box.

  3. From the Van Pelt website it looks like it is a 36 gear set, probably 36 tower and a 38/39 shifter. I guess the one owner of the ‘39 Mercury it came out of needed a replacement gearbox at some point in time.

    How does yours drive?

Definitely an early 1936 gearset, as pointed out above. The six helical splines on the mainshaft identify clearly. The 68-7222 shifter tower would have been the correct type for 1936-38. These shifter towers will accept the 1936-37 curved levers and the 38-39 swan necked levers.
