Technical Early Ford top shift identification

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by The Chevy Pope, Sep 30, 2023.

  1. Just picked this up tonight cheap. Seems in good shape but still need to clean and reseal. I know there's more numbers to look for but haven't had a chance to tear down for them. Any idea what this is out of? Guy thought it said i836 and thought that meant it was a 36 top shift. Get it home and I found it to be i839. Guessing this was a vin stamp. Does it actually say anything about the trans or is it just a vin? IMG_2023-09-30-22-06-03-807.jpg IMG_2023-09-30-22-06-17-924.jpg

  2. Going off Google shifter housing looks to me like 33-35. But seems the more I look the more confused I get lol

Yes, that angled back shift tower is no newer than 1935.

  4. And from what I'm reading won't fit later gearsets. Oh well it'll still work for what I need it for lol.

  5. At least the guts look good and move freely. Figure it'll just need cleaned IMG_2023-09-30-23-34-36-404.jpg

I hate to mention it, but that is a LOT of rust. When it's that bad, it usually goes beneath the hardened surface, with the attendant dire results. Also, you can check the "Van Pelt Sales" website and find the actual year from some tables there.

The gear set from any side shift 40-48 trans will fit in that case. But you will still need to find the proper double detent top, with the 3” fork.
