i have an early ford trans and the only markings on it are on the p***enger side just under the shifter cover plate. it say 59T-7006 or 7008 its too close to tell. if anybody can tell me what year is that would help a lot.

That would be a four speed truck box I believe. 59T would indicate a version of case introduced 1946. Don't know how long it was used...basic trans was used about 1930-- some time in '50's. If there is a serial number on bellhousing part (Likely ?99T-?????), that will date it exactly. If no serial, 1948 or later.

there is no serial number on the bellhousing. is there any visual way to tell the difference between the three speed and four speed? i can only get it to go into three gears and reverse, i ***ume. and does anybody have a picture of the shift pattern of the three and four speed.

    The shift pattern is conventional:
3 speed...forward and left for reverse, back and left for first, forward and right for second, and back and right for third. Typical H-pattern.

4 speed... forward and left for first, back and left for second, forward and right for third and back and right for high, reverse is far right and back.

3 speed has 2 shift rails,4 speed has 3. you can easily see the humps in the top cover casting.
