OK I blew the u-joint on my roadster pickup.

    I think the ****** is a 39, it's bolted to a 49 8BA.

I pulled a u-joint from my stash, and unbolted the rear.

The spare u-joint does not fit the transmission!!

That end of the joint is larger than the output shaft of the transmission.

I thought all 28-48 u-joints were the same?

The original u-joint with the smaller I.D. is marked with a "1" in a circle

The other, and all the ones that I see online, is marked with a "2" in a circle.

I need to get this fixed ASAP.

Is there differences between truck and car?

    Thanks,
    Rich

    Open drive, or closed drive?

If open drive, look at '42 to 52? I think, PU uJoints

I'll go out and get a quasi-measurement on the early Ford open uJoint for you to compare

Closed driveshaft, actually a shortened 40 ford torque tube.

    Shoot.

I don't have any closed driveline parts left to look at.

I thought they were the same also. I always jump over to the Ford Barn for the tech. advise.

Model A-'48 should interchange, though the early A ones made out of straps riveted together should not be used.
V8-60 p***enger car ones would be proper fit in back, too small in front. Pickup '28-41 would interchange, larger trucks with torque tube would be different. Maybe you have one from a Buick or something.
By the way...is yours plain bearing or needle bearing (Lincoln) type? I've only seen major wear on the Lincoln ones.
This should be the best forum on earth for locating a spare!

I just went to the ba*****t and pulled the u-joint from a complete 34 engine/transmission (forgot I had it).

It fits great, and it's nice and tight. Good to Go !!

The earlier one that I dug up may have came from a 41 pickup, possibly different?

The one on by RPU failed because the bolts on either side of the clamshell worked loose and all of the grease drained out.

Anyway, thanks guys, I should be back on the road tomorrow.
