I has a 392 early Hemi and my idea was a Lasalle transmission behind it. I located up a Cragar 4001 adapter and it goes to a old Ford, but then another adapter to go to Lasalle. ( if anyone has a Cragar sadapter for sale contact me - please ) The flywheel I has is a aluminium Schefer 146 tooth. I don’t know what Chrysler used or tooth on bendix std. -Question is, what starter was to be used to this set-up ?
I bought the following kit to put a 200 4R behind a Chrysler and it came with a starter. Their ad does reference a starter, but I don't know if it helps you with your adapters. I would call them as they were real friendly while discussing the adapter kit. https://transmissionadapters.com/co...mo101-early-hemi-to-chevy-automatic-392-350at
The whole ideas is go vintage here. I don't know if Cragar did make the final adapter to Lasalle but I know Offy did and others ( based from early Ford bolt pattern. But as I has a 32 Ford frame it is narrow and Cragar chanched side on starter as otherwise it would be a case with a steering box ( std location ) -But question it was Cragars design to a std Chrysler starter ? This partnumber many did use on this design was #4000.
Who living person on the planet today can know what Cragar used for flywheel ( dia / tooth ) on this adapters and starter ( tooth on starter ) or the early Hemis. In this case a 392.
Hi Hank, there was a fellow who had a build thread on here a few years ago of a '38 (or so) Dodge G***er for South East G***ers racing. He ran an early Hemi, maybe a 392. His name was Tony? Turner and the thread was "Dodge This" or something similar. You might find some details on his thread. Good luck! Al Hook
I did try search and name popped up but no threads here. But if I was building a retro racer and use a 392 I was having a SFI bellhousing and a modern racing transmision. I hardley think someone can be legal to use a cast Cragar adapter. The flyeheel I has and a Lasalle ( time bomb ) is a Very stupied way 2026, even to get a icecream... Maybe some has a old catalog, and small notes on that partnumber what tooth, starter they required. Mybe its long gone information today. Few are that crazy bought this stuff. HotHeads had no idea.
I believe that the 146 tooth flywheel uses Chrysler 6 volt starter whereas a 172 tooth uses the Chrysler 12 volt starter. 73rr on here can tell you for sure.
@3w Hank Do not know if this will help , I did a Internet search for Cragar catalog there where several links & catalog's linking back to threads here to HAMB , The ""Internet Searching"" seem to bring up more search results
I had a '54 short bell in my race car with an Offenhauser two piece adapter to an early Ford pattern CAE in/out box. I had a starter on it for tuning purposes,. The stock starter ('54 New Yorker) worked with the stock flywheel and two different aftermarket aluminum flywheels I subsequently installed. I think if you stay with "run of the mill" parts, it should work. I never knew here could be a problem until I read this thread.
I guess no issues but I has no parts to check with so its not that easy. I has try to search Cragar 400/401 adapters but no real information ( on my questions ) As the early Hemi has the same rear bolt pattern this adapter fits them all ’late’ 331/354/392 but there are 146/172 tooth ( no clue on starters ) So was the 392 12 V ? I think I know the 392 used 172 tooth. I do think my flywheel ( 146 ) will not fit but I has no starters to check. A buddy here has a 331 and he used a modify a Chrysler SB 60’s bellhouse but did not use Chryslers plate bolt the starter on so he had to make a longer own bendix ( but he builded it -92 so no real details, but his was free thinking, I has the Cragar. Guys today like use GM auto trans can get a kit from several choices and use modern mini starters.
On my search ; One at Hamb was selling a Cragar 400/401 and it was a new Weber 172 tooth flywheel in the kit. Now sold, and I try reach him but so far no feed back. I know so far the 12 volt starter was used in the 392 and they had the 172 tooth. I guess this adapter it accepting that 172 tooth and that 12 volt starter, but even if the 146 tooth might fit with the 6 volt starter its not a option, so I will try find a 392 std flywheel and starter. I know the starter is very heavy and I like a aluminium flywheel, but then I see it that is the key here ( as I know think ) If anyone has a Weber or Schefer flywheel at 172 tooth I'm intrested.
I don't think Cragar ever made the final adapter either. Offy did part #3640. As far as your other 2 Cragar adapters the 400 and 401 their identical to the offy adapters. At the GNRS I talked to guys at Offy about the 3640 adapter and they were taking names and phone numbers trying to get enough interest to do a run of their 3640 adapter.
The 172 tooth flywheel is the one you need. You can get a light weight power master starter. Hot Head Hemi's sells steel and aluminum flywheels.
I got feedback from the seller of the 400/401 adapters and he said they worked with 172 tooth and a std starter. I suspected Cragar never made the 3'd adapter. I know of a Offy 3640 20 minutes from me and a Lasalle trans and 32 frame/34 cross perfect for my project 392. We has no deal yet but good to know Offy might recast them. Just one question. I could use a new Powermaster starter instead of the std ( big in a 32 frame ) but the ***an has one more cast 'look' than the chromed Powermaster. But this was AI, according to a new starter might fit a 146 tooth flywheel in std position. Mention auto but not if manual trans was the same. I has ask Powermaster ( no feedback yet ) -------------------- For early Chrysler 392 Hemi engines (1957–1958), high-torque gear reduction mini-starters are popular upgrades to solve heat soak issues and improve clearance with custom headers. Popular options include the Powermaster XS Torque (e.g., part #9530 for 146-tooth flywheels) or versatile 1.4kW mini-starters available. Key Considerations for 392 Hemi Starters: Flywheel Tooth Count: Ensure the starter matches your flywheel/flexplate, commonly 172-tooth for automatic 392s or 146-tooth for others. Mounting: Look for starters with adjustable mounting blocks to ensure proper clearance with headers and oil pans. Power: 12-volt mini-starters offer high torque (approx. 200 ft.-lbs.) for high-compression engines. Application: These starters often fit 1951-1956 Chrysler 331, 354, and 1957-58 392 Hemi engines
What pressure plate would be used? Since the 3'd adapter is using a ford throw out bearing, fork and shaft? Would it be a Borg and Beck Mercury PP or Chrysler PP because of the Ford throw out bearing?
You are correct the 3'd adapter is Ford fork. I'm not build a racer here just something fit on the flywheel. The Scheifer 146 tooth I has had a surface diameter at 11". If the Powermaster starter ( 146 ) fit that adapter and the 146 tooth flywheel I might use it, but so far it look like I need a 172 tooth flywheel. I'm investigate if the automatic had 172 tooth and maybe manual had 146 (?) -I might has some std partshere to look at tomorrow.
The 172 tooth flywheel is what you need to use with the adapter. I also use a hemi to older ford adapter and then old ford to muncie 4 speed. That way I can use my 34 pedals, you need to use a 10 1/2 " ford pressure plate and have your flywheel redrilled for it. The power master was not my first choice either, but I don't want the big stock starter. I am running headers and the starter doesn't show to much.
1935ply, Great. -Now I know what to do, get a Hot Heads aluminium flywheel 172 tooth and a 10.5" Ford pressuare plate and Powermaster 12 volt starter.
H-H had only the aluminium in the 172 tooth flywheel, but it was drilled for an 11" B&B. ( I shore would prefere a old forged aluminium Scheifer or a Weber ) but.....how can I found one ? If I has a Flathead Ford V8 or the early Ford adapter to ( Lasalle ) with the 32 Ford fork/T/O bearing would not a Ford 'Long' pressuare plate be what to be used ( early Hemi ) but they are at 10.1/2". Ideas on that from go B&B ?
