Does anyone know if the detent in an early floor shifter (1964-1978 mustang) for a c4 and c6 is the same or not.
How would know a c6 shifter differs from a c4 and does anyone have one for sale for a c6

I have used those in the past and removed the detents and let the ones in the ****** do it on their own.

Be pretty easy to check as the trans has internal detents along with the shifter.
See if the trans lever has even movements between locations and if the shifter matches the movements in consistancy.
Keep in mind that any variance in travel distance between shifter/trans arm movements is made workable by trans lever length compared to shifter arm length.
Personally...I'd be shocked if there was a difference between C4 and C6...but...it is a FORD and they have definately shocked me with stupid changes before.

Both units are 3 speed with identical gate pattern, PRND21. Not a betting man but believe the shifter would work on either transmission with some adjustments / modifications to the actual shifter rod going from the shifter to transmission. Just make sure that the C6 has a floor shift transmission bracket, I think the column shift bracket on the transmission is different from a floor shift car. Also check that the kick down engages like it should when using the C4 set up. I used a modified C4 linkage and kick down from a local RHD car when I converted my 390BBF with C6 from LHD and it worked OK, I still retained the OEM floor shift as well. FYI 390s were not offered in Fairlanes here and Ford didn't sell convertibles. :D

  5. The shifters are the same, but the shift rod and lever arm on the trans aren't. And a column shift and floor shift trans will have different shift arms. The C6 was only available in the Mustang '67 through '73 behind FE and 429 motors.

64-6 Mustang C-4 Dual Range had a differnt pattern; instead of the 67 and later common P-R-N-D-2-1 the 64-6 had the P-R-N-Little Dot-Big Dot (aka Green DOT)-L, which translates to P-R-N-2nd 3rd only-L, 2nd, 3rd - Low only - so you can see the Drive & 2 positions are reversed - the detents MAY be the same spacing but they did different things, just something to be aware of
