I have an opportunity to aquire a 53 Caddy rear axle....what are they in comparison to , say a 57 Olds rear?.......Will a Caddy rear stand up to a mildly built SBC???

What is the ring gear dimension?

Those caddy rear axles are all by themselves...nuttin in common with B.O.P. stuff. I really doubt they would be much stronger than a 53 Olds/Pontiac rear and that ain't really too strong. I shelled a 55 3rd member back in the 60's in my parent's car which is the same as the 53.
Definetely not as strong as the 57-64 Olds/Pontiac.
If your car is light and you don't run slicks a mild sbc may not damage the caddy unit....
Give it a try. The worst thing that can happen is a catastrophic failure. Then, just pop a 9 inch in 'er...

Buy my 3.73 9" that's on the classified's board before I sell it in the local paper. [IMG]

The '57-64 Olds/Pont rears are very, very strong and although you have to hunt really, really hard for parts, parts are available. So are posi's. This will not be the case with that early Caddy rear.
