O.K. Q and A time, I have two 303's sitting in the garage, one is a Hydro (hell its attd, so easy to tell) the other has nothing attd and I'm trying to figure if its manual or Auto (no flywheel just the rear of the crank showing)is there an easy way to tell if its for a manual ??
Also if anyone in CA has a cheap set of 56 heads laying around let me know.

  2. maybe look for a pilot bearing in the crank...?

I wondered about that, its kinda hard to see, (dirty, dark and in the corner) but the hole in the back of the crank is smaller then the one on my spare 55 crank, so I'm guessing it might be manual with a bushing in it ? anyone know for sure ?

hydra-matic cranks have a pilot bushing too.the only way to know for sure it's a stick is if it has a manual trans bolted to the back of the engine.BTW there is no longer such a thing as a "cheap" set of '56 #10 heads.take a set of '55 heads and have hardened seats installed, then grind'em out so they'll take the bigger valves.then shave .030 or .040 off the heads to get the compression up,mine are .040 which nets 9.5:1 with stock deck height-george
