Folks Of Interest Early Stewart Warner gauge thread

For sure. Once I know what transmission I want to connect it to, I know exactly who I'm going to contact. I'm just really happy to know it's possible to use one.

 

Wondering if anyone can ID this gauge? I've not seen the EMPTY 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 FULL markings before??

A few Earlier SW gauges. Stewart Warner made so many styles through the years.

 

Rare 160mph speedo

 

Yeah, Ziffer, those Autocar type gauges were used in other vehicles of the day. They were made by Stewart-Warner & the only problem was that the graphics were applied to directly the inner glass. Over the years of service, the paint (?) starts to droop & deform, ruining an otherwise exquisite gauge. Here's a panel I put together that has two decent ones.

 

I have a few sets of the Autocar style, and not a straight circle in the whole bunch.

 

Anyone ever see one of these? It's like a 3/4 scale Hollywood panel, just a touch smaller than the usual. I tend to think it's Stewart Warner because it has three pop in light sockets in the rear just like the later straight five and Hollywood panels have. Top temp gauges are AC, other gauges appear to be SW. They are all rear mount and small, probably 2" size.

 

Why two Amp gauges? Two generators?
It looks like a two engine boat, as left side gauges duplicate right side gauges.

 

Yeah no doubt. Somewhere I had the other tach, it's a mirror of the first and turns backwards because the other motor would be reverse rotation.

 

May as well post this 80 mph speedo I recently ordered on eBay.

 

Anyone have any information on this cluster?

 

Chris Craft panel, believe Stewart Warner. Duplex gauges are desirable, unusual to see twin duplexes.

 

Used in big trucks and other utility vehicles as well. I once saw a huge Fargo in a yard with one of those panels. The yard owner wouldn’t sell just the panel and gauges, and I was seriously considering how I might get the five ton truck home to strip the dash out of it.

 

@ziffer. Yep, that is a great panel you have. As stated by our fellow HAMBers it was often used in Chris Craft boats as well as other applications.

Look at the back side and make sure all your threaded studs are there. This panel was for rear-mount gauges.

They clean up very well and can look pretty awesome. To give you some perspective, this one sold for $500. Rory had this one.

 

@ziffer You have (2) duplex gauges. That basically means 2 gauges in 1 housing. I see 2 fuel gauges so it was either a boat with dual tanks or a truck with dual tanks. You don't typically see that with these panels.
If you're going to set this panel up with gauges, here are 2 examples of how they would typically come. Temp, Fuel, AMPS, Oil Pressure and Tach.






This is what a rear-mount gauge looks like. Notice the mounting ears with holes. The threaded studs on the rear of your panel will slide through those mounting holes. This is why it's called "rear-mount". The gauges will slide in from the backside.

 

I just picked this pair up at a swap meet and as the op had said, difficult to find any information on them.

 

I have a few of these, I pulled them off of a diesel generator in an old, abandoned factory. my guess is they were industrial wings gauges from 50-early 60.

 

I believe they were flat out early 1950's, Pat. I like them because, in comparison to the S/W "Deluxe" Wings gauges, the actual wings emblem is larger. I think they only came with painted black bezels, which were made of crazy thin metal....one step up from aluminum foil. But, in turn, a bezel can easily be replaced with a thicker chrome one from a later small logo Utility gauge. What ones did you get? As far a I know, they only made a mechanical temp, amps, oil pressure & air pressure...a sure sign of them being made for industrial purposes.

 

You are probably right, I couldn’t get a good “gauge” on the era they were offered, the generator I found them on was from 1953 if I remember correctly. So that makes sense. Ill have to dig them up and get a few pictures. I don’t remember what ones I had.

 

With some help from some friends (thank you, Greg! @fleetside66) I was able to finally get my hands on not only 1, but 2 of these extremely hard to find Stewart Warner 2 5/8", smooth bezel, curved glass, crescent needle vacuum gauges!! It's amazing 2 were in a box of misc gauges...these are the unicorns.

 

Your catalog seems like it would be very helpful, in chasing down specific speedometer part numbers. Any idea where I could purchase a old Stewart Warner catalog, or perhaps view a couple pdf pages? I have a few, small Harley motorcycle speedometers (S.W. 563A, 565CM, and 565ED) from the 1950's, and I would love to view individual part numbers. Thanks in advance.

 

So working on a 1940s wood boat and has some interesting stuff. The old dash had the full line of early Stewart Warner gauges . I haven’t seen these before as they a duplex gauges and a 4 inch diameter. As you see it I stamped SW and are they junk or something good that they should be restored. The boat is getting revamped with newer motors and equipment.

 

I’ll take a look and see what I can find, you may have to hit me back up if I don’t post anything. There’s a lot of shiny objects around this time of year and I am easily distracted, my attention span just keeps getting worse.
