Is that a voltage drop of some kind? To use a 6v gauge in a 12v car?

 

That is a 58 Ohm resistor - Most likely a crude attempt to match the gauge to the sender.

 

its attatched to the power input of the gauge so its being used as a voltage reducer.

 

I was lucky enough to pick this one up from a HAMBer last Saturday. It is a 1930's Stewart Warner rear-mount longtail. Today I gave it a much needed polishing. I think it turned out great.

 

With these 3 I am close to having the set of 4. (Temp, AMPS, Oil Pressure, Gas) The problem is the matching gas gauge is hard to find....and the price of those is not pretty! But, this is good for now and I'm happy to have these!

 

You guys might laugh, but I made my own fuel gauge from a Jeep gauge from fleabay.

I had the face made from custom made vinyl graphics shop, and laser cut alum disks.

 

That turned out very nice. And that panel is KILLER!!!!!!

 

Like you said the gas gauges are bank, but even a blind dog gets a bone now and then. Until then, this will do.

Here is an outstanding example of an early style temp gauge. This is an MMG&E. They were made in La Crosse, WI in the early 1930's. They were used in a variety of applications such as Auburns, White trucks and Chris Craft wood boats. IMHO they are quite stunning and classy. I am ecstatic to have found this NOS gauge. It works great and presents very well. This is a prime example of why we should use vintage gauges in our hot rods. They are true to the era and at 90 years old it still works great and is accurate.

 

I'm gonna put this out there without reading too many the previous posts yet. I'm assuming its pre-1920.?.? Anyone have any clues as to application or year of manufacture?
It spins and works. I dont know why its mounted to the plates like it is....

 

Looks to be a Stewart Circa magnetic speedometer from 1910 to 1920's. They were made in Chicago. I'll have to do a little digging to find out which Model Number that is. Definitely not a Model 7, but very similar. Then we'll know if it was early (1910) or later (1920's)
The 258 that is etched on the bottom of the face is most likely the Patent #.

It wasn't uncommon for cars to not come with speedometers from the factory, so this gave people the option to add one at a later time. I have also seen these speedo's on vintage motorcycles.

I haven't seen any Duplex gauges posted yet. I just finished piecing this set together and had the temp line replaced.

Oddball Police Special. Haven't seen another like this one. Seems to be a cross between the black and white ones.

 

Here's an unusual set of mid-1950's Stewart-Warner Wings "Utility" gauges, which differ from the Deluxe gauges in that they are rarer & faces, bezels & needles are different. They also have flat glass & no external light source other than the natural light shining through the glass. The nice part about that is that in the rare instance you do find one (and the glass isn't broken), the face will be in great condition. It took me about 5 years to find the water temp via a HAMBer from Nova Scotia. It wasn't working, but is now. I don't know if there were any others made except for the pressure, temp, air pressure & the amps. There are virtually no pictures of them out there & no reference to them in any catalogs I've seen from that period.

 

I have been looking for a SW 2 5/8" oil temp gauge for about 2 years. These are pretty challenging to find. Wouldn't ya know it, in a 3 day period I have 2 of them! These are from 1948.

Today, this incredibly awesome vintage Stewart Warner porcelain advertising sign arrived. Such a generous and thoughtful gesture! Thank you so much! What an amazing piece to have.

 

A set of back mount bevel glass SW's that would be cool in an Auburn panel.

I posted this over on the save the gauges thread, but thought it might help someone out here. I couldn’t find a SW/Niehoff fuel gauge to match, but I did find a motometer fuel gauge. It is military surplus, and originally came in a tank.

 

Found this out in one of my connex's. Its Stewart Warner, anyone know anything about it?

Yeah, probably Cord...made by Stewart-Warner. Here's a 150 mph one that was from a 1937 Cord Phaeton (supercharged). At 24 miles on the odometer, I wonder if the new Cord owner got a little frisky with his new (or her) wheels.

 

SW gauges were made in Australia back in the '60s . Definitely sold as accessories, or for marine use. Were possibly used on Aussie built trucks, like IH .
Picture shows a set I purchased way back, for o project that is still waiting. Instruction sheet shows maker as Flexdrive. Page has a /64 date. I cannot see any date stamps on the gauges, but '60s sort of fits.

 

So Does anyone know about this gauge and marked reservoir
