Event Coverage East Carolina shakedown run to The Myrtle Run To the Sun

  1. I'm starting this thread for everyone that did a shakedown run to Myrtle Beach this last weekend for the annual Myrtle Beach Run To The Sun/ HAMB meet up. Me and few buddies definitely had a good time rolling out to the show with plenty of road side repairs for everything that could have possibly come up. Let's hear everyone's trip adventure to the show and what they did to make it down.

Myself, Hot Rod Scott & Jen, Chris, Carl, and Frenchy all meet up at 6am Saturday to make the run. We were all wired on coffee and lack of sleep due to burning the midnight oil finishing up Scott's 54 Chevy, Chris fine tuning his 50 Chevy and getting the carb/ ignition tune right and myself chasing oil& exhaust leaks on the 50 Dodge Coupe.

This was to be the shakedown for all of us and since Scott had taken the 54 off the road and rebuilt the top end of his 350, carb, wiring harness and gauges, sealed the car up replacing the cracked drivers side window and gaskets all around. Scott had been working every chance he had for weeks starting by getting the power steering pump replaced, new starter and flex plate, alternator, water pump and brackets. Wiring up the car with a new harness to replace the old and installing new gauges. We were still finishing up the wiring Friday night and getting all the lights sorted out and trans lock up wired to include setting the initial timing/ total timing, carb tuning.
Chris had just finished the final tune on his 50 Chevy, we had been working the weekend prior setting distributor spring rates, jetting, squirter size& accelerator pump cam and initial/ total timing.
For me I have my engine bolted in with solid motor mounts which causes hardware to vibrate loose and causes leaks. I had a pass side exhaust manifold leak and oil leak to contend with.

During the run down, we changed oil in the 50, had a broken drivers rear spring perch due to a pot hole in Wilmington and a bad coil ground. The 54 smoked a wire, and the belt cut a hole in the lower radiator hose. My 50 Dodge was leaking oil from a blown o-ring on the remote oil filter adapter and leaky brake master cylinder cover that I forgot to clamp down, which after the whole trip had hemorrhaged most of my brake fluid.

Making it to the show and meeting everyone was all worth it. The diversity of the show and meeting local Hamb'ers was the true payoff. For myself meeting TRUE car builders and being able to talk shop was priceless.

It was definitely fun and a great time haha. That's what hot rodding is all about. Driving what you built and having your friends there by your side while you get to enjoy it... not to mention have them drive you to the parts store when you break down on the median haha.

  3. I had to change a starter after I got there. I was having problems with it before I left, but didn't have time to change it, so I threw one in the trunk. Enjoyed talking to you all at the M&G. Hope to run into you some more this year. Carl

Carl, consider making the trip to Steel in Motion in May at Union. The caliber of drag cars is awesome as well as the quality. Most that were at the meet and greet will be there. Most of us are camping. We could probably recommend a hotel. Beachbum Jim and his wife stay in a hotel. Think about it.
