I remember there was a post about" East coast doesn't know about drive ins" or something like that.Well theres going to be a carshow & cruise at the Mendon drive in at 16 ****ord Rd.Mendon, Ma on July 10th( 7/24 raindate). Its put on by the bristol county street rods, it starts at 6:00.I don't know what movie there is playing but if you call 508 473 4958 they'll let ya know,I'll post it if I get it,It would be cool to get some local HAMBers there to hang out & tell stories about getting laid at the drive in when we where young,!!lol
I just may be able to make that! I've been out to that drive in before....its a good ride. Isn't there one in Smithfield, RI as well? I sort of remember one on rt 117? or17? Some route number.... The town I grew up in used to have a 2 screen drive in.....although now its a parking lot for the logan shuttle bus. Big whoop. When I was a kid the Neponsett Drive in was still around....although in its final stages as a drive in **** theater. (honest) I remember taking trips to Boston with dad up rt 93....the screen could be clearly seen from the highway and him saying "RICHARD....close your eyes!" Yup....drive in ****.....go figure. I'm convinced someone with alittle land and some imagination could make a killing opening up a new theater. Drive in movie screens will ALWAYS look better than soul-less office buildings or modular homes.
I remember that **** drive-in. In 1969 I was wrenching for Northeast Airlines and almost went off the road on my way to work on third shift. As a teenager I remember going to the Sky-view drive-in in Brockton. It's now a Walmart.
The drive in in smithfield is the Rustic on rt146, its still there,$15 a car load. They pack-em in on weekends. There was also the Lonsdale in ***berland-lincoln line. They just tore the screens down & there making it a bike path(good cause). The funny thing is they left the 2 signs up(One on John st, one on Mendon rd). jimV
I stumbeled across one visiting in laws in henderson NC.I too believe someone could build one today and make a fortune.Car shows, movies, good times.
[ QUOTE ] I remember that **** drive-in. [/ QUOTE ] That was 133 Drive-In in either Georgetown or Rowley.Remember it well
We've been to the Mendon event many times. It has sold out in the past so don't be late. They probably get 1-200 cars. I can remember when the Fast and the Furious was the movie that night and you could hear the whole place groan when the Charger went up in the air!!
Don't know about the east, but out west here we've still got 2 drive-ins in Idaho Falls and they pack them in in the summer months.
While we're sort of on the subject, what's the scoop with Star Drive In in Taunton? I know the screen has been missing forver, but it used to be a great cruise night & a good place for a burger. I made the trip down there last summer to find the place half-abandoned. I'm expecting the worst.....is it a CVS now?
There's one in Durham NC that's still open. The Starlite. One in Fuquay-Varina, NC that's not, the Cairo. A buddy tried to get ahold of it and open it back up. They want way to much for the land.
breaking news...the Alter Boys Jalopy Jamboree will also be held at the Mendon Twin Drive-in this year. We've just outgrown the Ralph's Diner parking lot so this should be perfect. They're devoting the entire screen 2 lot to our show. We're working on getting some old hot rod B-movies. The date is Saturday Septermber 25th from 4pm on. I'll post a flyer soon!
I've got three drive-ins within easy driving distance, and one even has two screens - they show 4 movies a night! Let me know if you want directions... Drive-ins Kick ***!!
Man, that's great that a lot of you guys still have open drive-ins to cruise. I'll bet there's some really pleasant cruising around the time when the leaves turn up there. We used to have at least four or five in this part of Texas when I was a kid but it seems all of them have closed down over the years. There was just something special about going to the drive-in. And not just the 'private time with your girlie' part. LOL Enjoy them while they're still there, Big Daddy Eric
there's actually 8 functioning drive-ins in nc as of right now. i know because my wife is a features writer editor for the local paper and just did a story on the current drive situation a few weeks ago. we visited the Belmont Drive-In and saw shrek2 to get some pics. had to go in her New Beetle cause i ain't got a running old car right now(for a few more days anyhow). i forget the site but theres a site that tell what driv-ins are still open and what ones used to be by state. i'll try and find it and post a link later. it's a real cool site. i talked about trying to arrange a show at one but haven't be able to focus on that since. theres a show at the one in SC in late summer early fall and theres also the Drive-Invasion in atlanta in the summer fun stuff...ken....
The Star is back open this year. It's in Berkely MA, some people leased it for a year, it's all cleaned up and looks really good.

New Jersey was the home of the first drive in[Camden 1933] there are no drive ins in NJ now.there was talk of restoring the one on rt 30 but i've heard nothing about it lately.there is one in Poughkeepsie and one in Hyde Park NY,[about 10 miles from me]but who knows how long they will be there
Hey FLASH make sure that you remind everyone that you need a Radio now to hear the movie, Maybe they can set up speakers!! JimV
You can thank my brother for deciding to get married on our usual show date! So we had to move it to Sept. 25th this year. This is the last day of the season for the drive-in, so no rain date. yeah, bring portable radios. my '48 doesn't have a radio in it!
Well thanks to your Bro then. For the BCSRA one in July, everyone brings folding chairs, small boom boxes and blankets. We sit in front of the cars and make fun of the flicks. Now in late September we may need kerosene heaters
