I'm not a big fan of bra's but I wanted something to protect the paint, so I used 3m easy release tape and then covered in 200MPH tape for the trip to B'ville. I did the front edges of the rear fenders, and rockers... Leaving early am. Insert puns here Tacky huh!, give this thread a sticky......
Not bad! Good idea. Wish I'd thought of it. You''ll be glad you did it when you get home. Whatcha gunna do to keep the salt off? B
I think the rule of "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all" comes into play here. what the heck do I know anyways... you are going to Bonneville in a HOT ROD and I'm staying home.
Not a bad idea and have to give you some credit for it for sure. If I had a nice paint job, I might do the same. But, short of that, I probably would have just rolled with it and let the chips be chips and part of the badge of honor of the trip. After many years, hopefully it all becomes part of the patina that represents all the memories and history of the car. Looks like a nice car regardless and have a blast.
I love ya man but that shit looks ugly. You know they make clear clingy stuff that works to protect the paint. Comes on new cars. Drive safe and I'll see ya on Sunday sweetie
Fuck that, that shit is just plain dumb. Scared ass pussy about the damn car. Get out and drive the fucker. Do donuts in a parking lot. Quit being scared.
Ya know, that would look almost alright if you made the tape look like blue flames! I'm curious to know how you're going to keep the salt from eating you car?
good idea but be careful some masking tape will not come off if gotten wet or in too much heat such as hot sun. Use pam cooking spray on the front it will keep all bugs from sticking and also help deflect rocks. Have a good trip RED
That is GHETTOE Fabulous. And not in a good way. Why not try bubble wrap? What is the point of having a nice car with nice paint if you are going to fuck it up with masking tape and duct tape? Wow!
If you really want to protect the front of the car go and have a chat with your friendly Porsche dealer. They use a clear film called something like Armourfend to protect the rear arches on the Turbos etc. looks OK for a few years and then tends to yellow but should be fine for what you want. Me? I would just let it get chipped and use a touch up for bits that bother you when you get back. Jealous. Moi? Say hello to the british contingent going this year. They will be easy to spot, Pasty White wearing shorts, sandels and black socks...... Hate you all...... P.
I would rather have the chips. I look at chips as a badge of honor earned from many miles on the road. Like others have said, the salt will do more harm than the rock chips. I do give you applause for the thought and effort though. Seriously, in the future if you are concerned about the rock chips there are several companies these days selling the clear plastic vinyl protectant. 3M, and eastwood are two that come to mind. Be safe and see you on the salt.
Trailer comes to mind. Sachie rod shop gets some kind of clear film they use. You can hardley see it.
There must be an old post on the procedue the racers go through to remove the salt, it takes WEEKS to get it all off, race cars, tow vehicles and trailers. I was told car rental places won't allow you to run on the salt and with the GPS crap out there I'm sure they know were you are.
use what you got..if it works ..and it was cheap..who gives a fuck ..right? now get out there and get your chrome sandblasted...you didnt cover that!
easy off black bra? that would be the greatest invention sense the wheel and to the complete joy of men and boys worldwide!! on a car?? not so much joy! i mean really how many folks can say i fucked up my paint at bonneville????
I agree, that damn blue tape can be a real bitch to get off once it's been in the hot sun for more that 24hrs. Have a blast at the Salt! Larry
Even with a bra you're gonna get rock chips. I'd run some experiments with the tape as well. Trying to solve a small problem may give you a bigger one. If ya look close you can see a big one right in the middle of the hood top. Pretty big piece of gravel came up, landed on the hood, took a chunk out of the paint then went into the windshield and gave it a pretty good chip. The little rock came up from a granny driven Toyota 4-door . . . and people worry about my lack of fenders. L.A. Freeway June 2000 during DRD57s fondly remembered Hot Cars and Haute Cuisine tour. And we wuz only doing 83 mph when granny passed us....
Well, I for one, appreciate Nuroadsir's attempt to try and save the paint on the front of his car. The roasting he is taking because he is trying to preserve his car's paint rather than getting it all pocked up with stone chips is just BS. It's his damn car!!! And he came up with a thrifty (read "cheap") way of doing it and he shared it with the HAMB. Isn't that what the HAMB is all about? I guess I agree with the statement, "If you don't have something good to say...", just shut the hell up. I did take notice of several people suggesting the use of the clear sticky stuff that is being used as a protection against road chips. When I saw this stuff at SEMA, it was very intriguing. However, the 3M stuff was mucho expensive, so what was being shown here was a true HAMB attempt to show the way to a "thrifty" alternative. But, I still am a little apprehensive about the use of the tape and exposing it to an extended period of time to the sun and resultant heat. I'd be nervous about that without first making a dry run to ferret out the bad side effects, if any. Just my 2 cents...
Drive it enjoy it but get rid of the bra. Let her shine in all her glory. But no bra. Its a car have fun.
