A few months ago I was in Salt Lake City for a seminar, so one afternoon I headed to Wendover to check out the salt.... I took my rented Mercury Sable out on the salt for a spin....LOL had a blast! When I turned the car in, the lady doing the check saw the salt residue around the wheel wells and looked at me with a small grin.... I just smiled back. No charges yet.
to the guys talking about the clear film, i used to install the stuff and it does work great but there are some bad things to it, one its just like a regular bra where the paint ages differently, and also it only really lays well on flat surfaces or in small pieces, so trying to cover a fat fendered car is going to be impossible unless you use alot of small pieces and then after a little while in the sun they shrink leaveing you with something looking like clear coat seperation. while nice and easy to install on a new electric razor car, kinda hard to do it on a car with curves. but some companys make specific kits for cars so you might check to see if they have it for old cars.
I can't find the whole article, but didn't they do something similar with Bob Hirohata's Barris-built '51 Merc http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com...5_rod_and_custom_first_50_years/photo_02.html
Thank goodness it would take a few weeks! Oh yeah, the tape is probably going to do more damage than good in the heat. Could cause lifting and bubbles. Just drive it and show off the chips. Tim
Been to Bonneville several times. Twice with my Stude. Drove it cross the country to get there and back. Will do it again, when life permits. Lose the Bra, use touch up paint when you get home, if needed. The bra is likely to collect and hold salt against the paint. The rest of the paint will be out in the sun getting faided, etc. Mine had two issues, one was a rock that kicked up and hit the cowl (an area that you haven't protected), the other was where the front tires kicked stuff up onto the rear fenders. If not willing to endure a little road rash, get a trailer.
Did anyone notice he put the blue tape OVER the easy off stuff? FWIW I'd rather have a nice shiny hood, than talk about where I got the chips from.
No offense intended but thats pretty street roddy friend. I can understand that you probably dropped a lot in paint and don't want to loose your investment but bottom line is that you built it to drive it right? If you drive it it'll show eventually. If all your after is keeping the bugs off than a good dose of carnuba wax then wait a week or so and another will pretty much keep 'em from sticking. I personally like the look of a butterfly and or a big assed locust or two, its like custom paint, sort of.
Let the chips fall where they may. Be proud of road rash! It's a badge of use not to be confused with mis-use or non maintenance. Or as Zman says....
It has been stated that the car is for sale. In that case maybe it shouldn't be making the trip. You could always ride shotgun with a buddy.
Folks at Bonneville will be snickering. I'll bet that tape does more damage to your paint than the rock chips will after a week or more in the sun. It's fine in a climate controlled environment, but high temperatures, humidity, and a lot of UV will make it behave differently. No one said it, but that's a good looking Ford you got there. Nice paint!
I for one think it's a clever idea, and whether or not it's difficult to remove will be determined after the trip...and if there is residue left over there's some great stuff called Goo-Gone, or wax and grease remover, or even WD-40 that will pull it right off. I think it's comical that very few actually appreciate someone trying to preserve the finish on their car...
So do you actually drive your car? If it comes down to preserving my finish and looking like that or driving and having road rash, I'm gonna end up with chips.
bras dont belong on taht type o ride.. for that matter, i need to go wash my best bro before i go out tonight!
so your worried about rock chips but not salt thats gunna eat that fender under the paint....................huh? well ill just go get in my roadster and enjoy it, who fuckin cares, its paint, its not gold, you dont need to worry about fuckin rock chips...
No. Look again. The blue tape is on first. It is the easy-off maskng tape. Then he covered the blue tape with black duct tape. They say there is a 1001 uses for duct tape, but this is not one of them, nor should it be.
I think that easy off maksing tape will be bloody hell to get off after it gets bakes in the sun out there. Looks like a real nice car though. Where are your turn signals? I'd go ahead and take that off before the tape becomes a real bitch to get off.
Maybe Red Green told him it would work..you know that guy used duct tape for everything.. really though, as long as the tape doesnt hurt anything and it keeps it from getting nicked up, than whats it really hurting? Besides..its his car...right?
