I understand the quality dropped significantly, and they don't last.

I got one on my roadster. It was cheap, works good now, don't know how long it will last. For sure its not a Flaming River.

Bought one but have not used it. It came in the type of cardboard and paper that you only see from product made in China, but had no markings...

Ha! I always wondered about that cardboard. You can tell it's from China from a mile away! They must have one giant cardboard factory that makes all the containers for everything exported.

  14. The Flaming River boxes are junk. Check out previous posts here about them.

The China or Canada box has to be better than Flaming Buttholes box:eek:.

I've been told that they work okay, however, you'll need to check for steering gear oil/grease. A couple of HAMBers mentioned that they don't always come filled with grease.

I've got one that I'm planning to use on my next project because the originals are like chicken teeth (nonexistent) or have too much wear.

Repops are readily available, and I hope that they last. Their ads mention that they're more durable than the original and have different, beefier, type bearings in them.

Hope this helps and hope they last long.

  16. My buddy Joe bought a Flaming River and it leaked from day one and is still leaking. Not much but just enough to make a spot.

Put a Flaming River Vega-type box on my 37 coupe about 5 years ago--had an original Vega box on it for about 20 years.I've had to adjust this damn box every year and a half--steering gets loose and needs about a 1/4 to 1/2 turn on the adjuster--never had to adjust the original box.Just thinkin how long this thing is gonna last----

I'd bet a week's pay these are Chi-Com look-a-like boxes. They may look OK but what about the metallurgy? Do you really want to save $$$ on a part that could mean life or death.

Remember the space shuttle Challenger was built by the lowest bidder!

Well. Looks like dragrcr50<SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_3019568", true); </SCRIPT> had no problems with those deadly boxes.

For less than half of a Flaming river I would give it a try.
Also, as you can see not all FR users are happy to say the less.

Nothing I've ever bought that was made in China was as good as an original part.. nothing.

If your life is only worth the $200.00 bucks you save go for it... but I'd buy an original box and rebuild it before I'd buy some box made in an unknown country by an unknown company...

Ummmm, no. Too critical a part to trust to circumspect manufacturing. Read any of the posts about the chrome plated steering arms and their catastrophic failure? How fast do you want to be going when it decides to go bye-bye? Find an actual Vega box, rebuild it, and be safe.
Of course, this is just MY opinion....

Saw this at SEMA about 3 years ago. Canadian company bought the rights to repop them, but not sure if they're made there or overseas. Price was cheap but I could tell looking at it that quality was crap, nowhere near the orginal. Best bet is to find a good used box and send it to Borgeson for a rebuild.

  24. I'm on my third Flaming River box in my '36.
Did the same as yours, loosens up in about 18 months of driving.
They tell me once you turn the lash nut it turns to trash!

All the leaking problems seems to be from Flaming river users.
