Back in the old days of prohibition, there were " speak easies " I can a situation in the future where some very cool farmer or rancher that is a cool gear head, will have a private " sell easy " where a big old barn can be used as a place to sell and buy, but I doubt that will happen, word always gets out about such things!

[QUOTE="41 GMC K-18, post:This kind of makes the element of swap meets a bit more attractive, a shame there are not more swap meets, still there is vendor fees to contend with, nothing is ever easy anymore. Sales tax here in Seattle is high as well!
Here in Idaho , at the swap meets, we as sellers are handed a sales tax form to fill out. At the end of the swap meet, we must show how much we took in at our booth. And then we are to send in to the "Tax Man" a 6% over all fee. Idaho sales tax is 6%. You have three day's to send the form in, and then the "Tax Man" can come after you with a penalty!

But you guys are all missing the elephant in the room. eBay is raping and pillaging and nobody is even getting kissed.
I bought some shift knob mounting hardware from China on eBay. Then eBay added my local state tax to the transaction, which means they are treating it as though the store is here in Texas (where the buyer, me, is.). The rest of the US market only collects where the seller is. The OP is in Canada and had to pay the sales tax where the seller is not where he, the buyer, is. Do you get it? It's a flip and a flop. Brand X (Amazon) doesn't add sales tax when I buy from an offshore vendor. Why should they? But why does eBay? Where is the store, again?

I'll tell you why. eBay has always charged seller's fees based on the gross dollar amount. If I sold an item for $50 and charged my buyer $5 to ship to Georgia, eBay's selling fees to me were based on the $55 gross transaction. If I sold the same item to a buyer in Australia and shipping was $20, eBay charged me fees based on the $70 gross amount. I had a bigger expense but eBay gouged me for a bigger hit leaving me with a smaller share. I believe eBay may be rolling the sales tax into the gross amount of the sale and has simply given themselves a raise. Also, think about the financial benefit of having millions of dollars in tax collections in an "overnight bank account"; money that doesn't have to be passed on the each state for a week or so. Millions just sitting there to do whatever they want with it.

I don't begrudge the out-of-state, sales tax loophole being closed. As long as the funds collected go toward benefits for the citizens of each respective state, the money is paid indirectly back. I do resent eBay buttering their bread on both sides and throwing everybody else under the bus, though.

Used items have always been subject to tax in NY. It's never been enforced. Have a garage sale? Your are technically supposed to collect and pay tax on your sales. I'd counter that you should record what you paid for an item. Then what you sold the item for. If you didn't make a profit, you can take a loss on your taxes when tax time comes. It's a game. Play the game.

  7. I used to have to file a quarterly tax report and pay the sales tax then. now I only have to pay when I file my state income taxes. And yes I have to pay sales tax on the full sales price. not on the profit made after the cost of doing business. I wonder when they will start collecting some kind of tax when we sell to the recycler? If I sell firewood ,logs or even a pile of Rocks I must pay the state a Severance tax.

I don’t mind being the poster boy, as a long time eBay seller all I did was relate what I found when I learned of the new tax policy. Don’t blame the tax man, from the article I read it was retailers that were pissed about sales from out of state having an advantage.
Consider this- Amazon sales make eBay look like a garage sale.

They charge the money. No, I'm not making this up. It's reported as "The city of Bugtussle vs. $10,000" or something like that. Pretty cool, huh? LOL

The IRS documents already spell out how to handle taxes on Bartering, they thought of that long ago.

As 36 roadster alluded to, that additional 10% tax we incur is a big thank you to our greedy federal government dropping the threshold from $AUD1K to now include all international purchases. Even when I intend to ship down here and have items sent to my CA address, I get slugged for local CA taxes despite it only being a stop off point and not a final destination. Double whammy!
Even then, the majority of purchases work out less than buying the same thing locally, however you need to be savvy. Even when I use my CA based shipper to freight multiple purchases into a single consolidated package, it now collects the 10% tax on behalf of the government!!

Brick and morter stores , big and small are closing at an alarming rate nation wide. Hell, world wide due to online purchasing. Do you have a clue how much state revenue is lost every year ? This has been going on for years. I am surprised it took this long. And when I had my Hot Rod shop and took my rig to NSRA, Goodguys, and Back to the 50's shows out of state I had to apply for a state sales tax number in Michigan. Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois , Iowa and Minnesota. The states required this from the organizations and if I did not have the tax numbers, I could not get my vendor stalls even though I was there to display and not selling. Had to file a tax statement that said sales amount "zero". Never paid taxes just annual tax number fee's. But tax agents could be there and had I been selling stuff I could have been required to show sales documentation. And this was back between 1992 and 2007. Here in Wisconsin selling used parts at Jefferson and Iola I have to give them my sales tax number or SS number so I always covered my ass and figured the tax into the sale price ,I just never told the customer because I did not want to hear the bull shit. Did I report every last sale? Like I said I cover my ass , I do not get crazy about it! What they did not know did not give me a headache! And no matter where my customer's cars came from I was required to charge tax on new, and used parts, materials and labor! That's Wisconsin state law. Larry

Except that Oregon is one of the few states that doesn't have a sales tax (despite Salem's best efforts)...

It's hard to understand why anyone would be OK with paying more taxes , regardless of the reason / rationale ....!! Can't say more without getting political ...

But wait, I've an idea, let's making everything tax free, ya with me? Let's let the fire departments, polices, etc, be paid from the private sector...got a call to 911? That'll be 900 dollars sir, cane I have your card number please?

Ohh, that pothole i the middle of my town, guess I gotta pay to have a service come fill it up.

Damned taxes, what are they good for?

  25. eBay doesn't want to collect tax, there is nothing in it for them, only the pain in the ass of collecting and sending it in. if they make a mistake or file wrong or late they pay a fine. I collect sales tax in my business and it costs me.

  26. Duh.....how long did we think the states would allow it ? Been paying the extra of late and just glad I don't have to keep track.....and thankful for all the years without it !

There is only one answer for you, if you don’t want to pay taxes you must get very wealthy. They beat the IRS out of their fair share every year.

It’s apparently not everywhere yet. I just bought a steering box on eBay from a guy in Minnesota, about an hour ago. No sales tax.

Blame it on Amazon . They got sued by the brick and mortar stores. Now all of the online sellers are supposed to do it .
I got in a long discussion with Jegs when I ordered something about 6 months ago. He told me they were required to charge sales tax. I told him I would order it from Summit and not pay tax on it because it was an out of state sale. They don't charge you tax then they hide the cost in the handling charge.
Some still don't charge tax or a handling charge now, but it's coming. Take it from a former treasury employee. when the Govt says collect taxes or else, the or else won't be pretty.
