With new luxury cars listing for over $100k regularly, even new Mustangs like the GT500 going for nearly $50k, and ALL of the new cars, no matter how pricy, depreciating, guys are willing to shell out big dollars for decent cars like this. No one here denies that it's a desireable car, the discussion is just at what price point we'd put it personally. Well, I wouldn't pay over $100k for a new car (unless that was a tiny fraction of my income) but there are a lot of people that can and do, because that's what they want, and have made the money it takes to indulge.

Even if you lose money over a few years for buying a car like this, it's less than the depreciation on a new BMW 7 series...

This car does look nice, and they do bring big $$! However, has no one noticed that it looks like every seal is leaking?...rear main, tailshaft, pinion seal, etc... The engine is dirty and rusty, wiring is a mess, and I'd be pissed if I spent 100K on a car and it leaked on the driveway, no matter how nice it looked.

I havent seen the car in question..

and given that it has some "hickups" (incorrectly on purpose) everything thats "wrong with the car can be changed.. (ie the dash the wheel and the leaking seals..)

in my opinion. I think any wagon in this condition or similar is worth 100,000.

As has been said the wood is the value.. and if that wood isnt original its a very very nice quality restoration..

    as I see it..

the problem isnt in the "done" cars.. its in the project or builder cars.. (and I am as guilty as the rest)

given that my wagon (dejango's old one) is "done" minus wood at this point.. I would have a hard time selling it for what I have in it..

however as soon as it looks complete and has some wood (which is happening soon).. the price skyrockets..

    so rusty new yorker..

did you ever sell the shoebox woodie? and if not why the heck would you mess with another one?

The latest issue of Street Rodder has an article on a '40(?) woody. The guy spent $45K on a good original in NJ,then shipped it to CA andtoe it apart to rod it. Did a nice job from the photos, took it to a show and sold it that day to some Canadien for 10K more than he built it for. Figure that out-never even drove it.

  6. If only we could go back to the days when we could poor thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours into a car and have it be worth 10% of what we have into it. THEN MAYBE YOU GUYS WOULD BE HAPPY?

Just to elaborate on what some guys have already said

The people buying most of these cars are investors, not 'car' guys. They don't buy because they've always wanted one just like it, or because it's like a car they had when they were younger. The deal is to buy it, then sell it later for more than they paid for it, and more than they could make by investing the same amount of money in stocks, real-estate or other items. Later could be days, months or years down the road.

As in all speculative purchases, the market will become saturated as there are only so many people with the disposable income to invest

If it gives you any comfort, the bubble WILL burst, and someone is going to get left with an investment car he can't give away for the price he paid. I've seen happen in other markets (mostly real estate). Unfortunately, when the prices do go down, they don't go back to pre-speculation levels, and when the prices do drop, they usually trigger of another round of speculation because everybody thinks they're getting a deal, and the prices go back up.

All things economic run in cycles (and other things do too)

woody wagons have been worth a ton of money for quite some time. BJ had nothing to do with it. Perhaps the fact that they are wood and super ****ing cool had something to do with it.

75K is nothing for that car. I own a nomad because I couldnt find or afford a woody. That was 15 years ago! I still kinda keep my eye out for em' but even shoebox woodies are over 50K.

As long as there is a California with sun and waves Woody wagons will be expensive

  9. So far I'm not. I sold the shoebox twice - once for $1200 in February to Executive Motor Cars in Ambler PA. They sent me a deposit and wanted to have the car ready to pick up before they paid off. So I had it out front on March 5th. The beginning of May, after being outright lied to about a dozen times that shippers were coming, money was on the way, etc., I started charging them $10 a day storage. On the 12th I relisted it on eBay. (they paid a $300 deposit and terms state $150 deposit nonrefunable, it was just an excuse to keep the second $150).

The very end of the listing a nice gentleman from a little further west in PA bid $1500 for it, I've been letting him pay in installments, but he is paying for it. Says he wants to rebuild it - I say good for him, if you have the time to screw with these things obviously you can make pretty good money with them.

About a day after it sold again, the executive motor clowns finally sent the balance. but I sent it back. They're talking about misunderstandings and hoping to do more buisness in the future and I'm thinking that if it takes them 4 months to pay off a $1200 car, I'll die of old age before they pay off a $6500 car. On the bright side, subtracting for the rollback tire I had to buy I did $1650 on it, which would have taken it away from day one -

But my conclusion is no one wants a woodie carc*** unless it's an extremely rare model - and posting this thread has shown me why - it's a substantial investment to redo the wood in one, both in money and time, and the number of guys who can afford to invest $60,000 on a car is pretty limited - even if when done it will make a $40,000 profit. I'm still going to go look at this car - I'm still not entirely clear if it has the doors/gate on it and the top is just collapsed, or if all the wood is in a pile in the middle of it, but I suspect if it has most of the hardware with it it might be worth $1000-$1500. The $750 carc*** had none of the hinges and things left.

I found out too my timing was just bad on that shoebox. 3 or 4 years ago I could have gotten $3500 or so no problem, but lately you're talking $2000 top dollar for a ****py one. The shape this was in didn't help it much either - a lot of guys can't see past a missing panel or two.

I think if I was still stuck with it now, my buddy has a line on a '50 tudor that was restored and has been sitting, that like $500 would take - I would grab that, cut the back body off it, and put the top and rear of the woodie on there and make it into a runner that needs wood, paint the rear body up in primer and so on - in that shape they seem to bring $7500 without too much trouble.

Seems like I am better sticking to 50's convertibles, the last one I bought I had resold in 3 days cash up front based on photos showing the car with 2 feet of snow around it. I actually screwed up there, because the car was so nice when we got it out I think it would have brought twice as much money, but sometimes that's how it goes - at least the guy who bought it wants to restore it.

On this eBay car, I got a look at the dash photos and I was amazed. It's ugly in there, you'd think this one would have a banjo wheel and a stock dash maybe with someone's gauge set for one of these in it, not a billet set and 70's Ford wheel that makes it look like the whole combo was bought in a K-mart. Underneath it looks like a driver, too, road grime and surface rust.

There is another one on now that has all the wood intact, it was bid to $12K, it came with a bare carc*** parts car too. I'll have to see what that one sells for. Someone had started to convert it to the same front end as the expensive one, so I guess you need the second frame to restore it to original. But I'd bet that one could be made just like the $75K one for about half the money, unless it ends up selling for $50K -

I looked at that steering wheel again and recognized it. It is just like the stock steering wheel from my '69 Delta 88! All they have done is put some padding on the center spoke, covered it in that black (leather/vinyl?) and stick a blue oval on it. I'm not kidding!

$75k and without the original motor, tilt column, billet dash, air...but, its original?....

what do those checklists do for ya?

Incredible price...Congrats to the owner if he banks on the car. The car lost me w/ all the "Updated" gear in it.

    dissappointing.

And it's got a cd player in the dash, what were they thinking?

  14. Must have a GM column in it, there is a Buick wheel that looks like that too, around 70-73-ish. Sometimes it's amazing what people will cheap out on when they build a car - there's literally tons of better looking wheels that would fit right on there.
