Reading through this thread is making me crazy. It has to be, because I want an Econoline now. You guys are killing me.

What kind of comments do you get driving around in these?

    Do you really care? Really?

I get a lot of hippie type comments and a LOT of Scooby Doo comments... even though the Mystery Machine was not a Ford.

I added a Van! Figured I didnt have enuff stress in my life besides it seemed like a great deal. Good friends and a cool AZ day made it a blast.

Joel (art guy in the black shirt) has been hammering a way on it. Tearing out the sweet love seat sleeper sofa. The bitchen shag carpet and ikea lamps. Almost fired it today but ran out of time before he had to go paint signs...

its a 64 with a 4 speed and Im guessing a 240. Looks bigger than my 174. Love the 5 slots...Only Joel will know where this one goes!

So Im looking at an Econoline Panel, with no windows in the back doors (Rapemobile). How hard is it find find a set of rear doors with window to swap in there? Also, how have you guys mounted bench seats in the back of the panel which had no mounts?

    Thanks

Doors on the side, and doors in the back, but no windows in either.

Panels only have the rear doors. No doors on the side. There are a few guys here and on the vintage vans site that would trade you doors.

You can weld studs or drill holes in the floor to mount the seat.

    Show us some pics.

Steve, so is this one is not called a panel, because of the side doors? Do you think is came with no windows in back, or did someone switch doors somewhere along the line?

My 67 supervan camper is headed to Brown's Metal Mods this weekend to get a desoto grill and some rust repair. Got 64 T-bird reclining bucket seats on the way for it too. Need some good fold down bench for the back still.

Econolines came in so many different ways. All in all about 20 including the extended super van. The only thing they all have in common is that they all had 88" wheelbases. Mine is an 8 door with windows in the doors only. I've seen them in every configuration you can fathom. I also have one that is called a display (89E), which has all the windows on the right and none on the left. Mostly used by the phone companies.

Yours, doors on the side and if it has no windows, only the winshield and the front doors would be a form of a panel (89A). I true panel (89H) has only the very rear doors.

If you can make a trip to Michigan on Sunday June 27th in Milford there is a gathering of the early vans at Bakers. There are guys that come from Ky, Tn, Ill, In, Oh, Pa, Canada, etc.......

I enjoy this show. I have to keep telling these guys, I am NOT a van guy, I'm a guy with a van. Believe me there is a difference.

Sorry , they came with 90 " wheel base . They did come with many different body styles . I have a '64 and '65 panel , no side doors . Different engine sizes ,144 ,170 , 240 . Acouple very rare 200 on record .

Steve, I have 2 rust-free window doors that I'm going to put into my van. You can have the window doors that are currently in the van... if you help me swap them out. :D They're in pretty good shape, but not as nice as their replacements.

The side and rear doors are interchangeable, so someone might have put side doors in the rear on yours, or it's a rare model. The true panels (no side doors) are pretty rare, but that doesn't necessarily translate into greater value.

That would be cool . That would put the front wheel back in the center of the fender .

Does anyone know how difficult is it to drop the gas tank in these? The one I am looking at sounds like it needs a good cleaning... Anyone done this?

Not bad to drop a tank . Make sure the tank is empty . Take the sending wire and hose off the front of the tank . Remove the filler hose . Remove the two "J " bolts what hold the tank up behind the roll pan . There is a breather hose on the top of the tank . To remove the sending unit , Turn he locking ring counter clock wise . I use the flat side of a screw driver - no the tip . There are kits you can buy to clean and seal the tank . Hope this helps .

A friend of mine has a 64 he is working on. He has a heat problem. The first engine rebuilt for it...a 250, ran at temp cruising or sitting in traffic, never overheated, on the highway it ran quite a bit hotter, like 220+. He has new mustang radiator, built a tunnel above the floor for more airflow, electric fan, no help. The engine had a knock, he swapped into another one. Runs cool in traffic, hot on the interstate. Any ideas?

  30. Sounds like a water flow problem.
