Technically, they fall in the year break, but I wouldn't consider them a hot rod.....unless you wanna talk about the wheelie cars of the 60's. With that said, there has been a slick one for sale locally. A 5 window. I thought it might be a cool driver. Did they ever have a V8 option? I know most had the 200 Inline 6. Any easy disc brake swaps? I don't know squat about them.
First gen nope, no V8. 1st gen had the I6 options, 3/4spd and C4. Scarebird has disc brake kit. These Econoline are based on the Falcon, but with a solid front axle.
No V8's , the early ones were 170's and the later ones had the option for a 240. You can tell if it has the 240 by a bump out in the front of the bed due to the larger engine. Mine's a 240 with 3 on the tree.
35 years ago, I had a box van I put a Boss 302 in with a C4 with a high stall and 9" with 4.88 gears. I called it the Flying Box! That was a lot of fun!! After that I put in a 351C and C6. Used a Dodge van engine cover for that.
Eons ago, I had an Econoline 5w pu, that I had gotten from my uncle after he used it to haul building materials for his house(from start to finish), that some previous owner had swapped in a 260 Sprint(figured out that later). Guy left the 3sp in. He managed to get the mill in slightly crooked, p***-side tilted down ~1-2" or so. Started to fix it, but realized: 1) it wasn't going anywhere, things were solid - if not ugly, 2) would be way more work than it was worth, to fix it right, 3) worked just fine as-is. <shrug>. I managed to shear the pinion off, idling down a city street, on my way to college cl***. Sigh... Luckily, I had a proper 9" to bolt in, & a friend that cut me a driveshaft & welded it so nicely it didn't need balancing. Was originally black, but someone past, had painted it very bright almost lime-green, & some of that was coming off in small patches. Gave it an almost polka-dotted look... . Drove it for a few yrs, then sold it. Wasn't a Dodge A-100, so... Marcus...
Here's 93 pages about them. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/econoline-madness-whos-got-one.178391/
I just finished this one, had it shipped in from Calif., because it was rust free. It killed me with other stuff, into it now for a bundle. going to get rid of it, lost my storage space as soon as I finished it.
I've got a '61 window van I've been working on for a while. 200 six w/3speed and a 9"rear. Build thread here: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/1961-ford-econoline-window-van.1308869/ A buddy has one he put a 302 in, but he had to hack up the floors quite a bit to make room
They never had a 200 or a v8. 144, 170 or 240. The 240s were optional in 65-67 and had a different bell housing, throttle controls, radiator, crossmember and 9" rear. All others had a 7" rear. A 240 bell will bolt to a 289/302. A 289/302 will bolt to the 240 crossmember. Everything else requires a lot of work. I made a post (years ago) about how I converted my '65 170 to a v8.
The engine crossmember for the later 240 ci can be adapted easily to the earlier year and bolt in V8 motor mounts. The 9" from the later 240 ci will bolt right into the earlier years. I put a hypo 289 / C4 with 3.5gears in this one back in 1970.
I had a 1967 Dodge A-100 and it came with a small V8 and automatic transmission, I replace the engine with a 340 out of a new Duster. That van would fly but the brakes should have been upgraded. HRP
Here's one a buddy of mine picked up a few months ago. We got to fiddling around one day with some trim from a 56 Studebaker and think we came up with a plan. I had Moose doctor it up a bit on the Photoshop thread. So, here's an "As Is" pic and a "doctored" pic
Back in high school my buddy had a flat black van model, no windows, not even on the back doors. 70's van all the way ,****, paneled.Ansen Sprints, steep rake etc. It was a real POS tho, poor van had the **** beat out of it. Smoked like a locommotive, overheated and he carried a baseball bat to beat on the 3 on tree linkage when it bound up. One night him and I were drinking a few beers and tearing it up on local dirt roads Caught a little air and when we landed ,the bolt that held the transmisson to the transmisson mount fell off. Tailshaft went down, engine came up.Engine cover pushed up, top radiator hose pulled lose and sprayed hot coolant all over us and the ****! It was a full moon and we were able to stagger around and find the bolt. Always had plenty of tools, so we were eventualy able to patch it all back together and fill the radiator with cooler water and beer and drive home. It was real heap, but it always made it home! Good times!
