........UPDATE......... oj's initial inspection determined that they carb needed additional cleaning beyond that which I performed...with close consideration to the bowls which had some green scaly **** on them as well as other br*** pieces. After oj cleaned the carb, it was placed on his test motor and oj duplicated the same condition I was having here on my 283. so......the carb cam back off with oj's focusing on the idle circuit. Supply holes and restrictors in the circuit seemed to have been the culprit. I don't know the process involved but they were cleaned and all seems to be well now and on its' way back to Connecticut. oj....you da man.......thanks a bunch. Chuck
Glad to hear it's fixed, but I hope OJ will come back to this thread and tell us all what he found and how he fixed it! Dave
Chuck or oj? This thread was left hanging. The last thing Chuck said was that everything was fixed, the carb was coming back to him and that the problem was with the idle circuit, but he didn't know exactly what was done. It would be nice to see this thread finished properly.
OK, I guess you're right, OJ fixed it, and Chuck hasn't told us what OJ did to fix it, if you wanta split hairs! But what's important is that NEITHER OF THEM has had the courtesy to come back and tell the rest of us what was wrong! And that's not the way it's supposed to be done! Dave
Believe it or not.....this issue has yet to be resolved. oj sent me the carb back a few months ago...I tried it on my motor and had similar results. Albeit slightly better. oj said he sent it back to me.....probably in haste(his words). I dont think he tried it on a test motor before he sent it back and thought that the drilling into some port/jacket/circuit thingy would have done the trick. It didn't....again oj wanted the carb back at his shop to take another look. He cleaned it out some more...replaced a few more parts and is in the process of sending it back. Neither of us had any urgency tagged to this carb as my truck is idle during the winter months and spent the whole damn month of January diggin my *** out here in CT anyway. I cant thank oj enough for all his efforts. He seemed to think that it idled okay on his test motor but didn't get another sbc to try it on and go for a ride in....so I'll get back to you guys when I get a chance to bolt it on.
Bolted it on....still cant get the idle down without stalling. Tossing around the idea of sending it off to Edlebrock....or as suggested....drag it behind the truck.
Late to this topic also, but found it because i had the same problem on a new build with my 67 olds 442. Engine was on a dyno for break in with a 1407 edelbrock carb. Carb was removed for transprt, when installed in car I used a heat insulator gasket with the 4 metal bushings. Car acted exactly like oj's. I did the butane thing but without a hood on the car and the flex fan moving a tremendous amount of air the butane was diluted and useless. In this topic someone had mentioned about the baseplate gasket and it got me thinking that was the only difference from the dyno. Pulled the carb and the center divider of the gasket was missing and you could see where air was leaking across the gasket. Here the metal bushings in the gasket were thicker than what the gasket was and prevented the carb sealing against the intake. Replaced it with a thin flat gasket and all is well. Did pull the plugs to check if the divider of the gasket damaged the plugs and also did a compression check and was fine. So I guess it just got digested through the engine.
