Technical Edelbrock Carb issues

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by strangepanel, Jul 11, 2021.

  1. Hey all,

So I pulled the top off the carb. Sprayed carb cleaner in the fuel adjust holes. Had maybe a slight hesitation in getting flow from the left bleed. I felt like it ran fine for about 30 second, idle popped up by about 500 rpm (about where it would have been before it started acting up since I had to raise the idle by about 500 rpm to keep it from stalling) and then dropped back to where it was at 1000 and lost power in terms of whenever I put it in gear. So either I just didn't get it all blown out, or it is something else. Edelbrock had said to check the floats, but they were both set exactly at 7/16 as is recommended. Took the fuel pressure down to about 4.5 psi from where it was at 5.5. Maybe helped the fuel smell from the engine compartment a bit. May try spraying carb cleaner down the square vent holes as No55mad recommended a few times and then try starting it again tomorrow.

Probably need to do a better job of cleaning the float bowls since there was a little crude in there. Any advice on the best way to clean those out without just stirring up the gunk?

If any of that works I'll post about it. Thanks for all the tips!

  2. Well, can't say what it was exactly, but after taking the carb apart four times, spraying about 2 cans of gumout into everything, replacing the wires and cleaning all of the plugs I've managed to get the idle back to where it was. I still think the blocked air bleeds contributed. Still thinking I'll replace the distributor cap and rotor at some point in case those are starting to go bad as well.

Thanks again to everyone that gave advice!
