How you guys go about the brakes. Its a 1958 Edsel Ranger, I found the shoes but i need drums now and I dont want to convert to disc. I want to leave it stock. Any idea what may fit or were can I get them new? Kanter sell rotors but $150 a piece this is more of a buget build. Thanks
If you want those drums for that 57-59 Ford/Edsel rear, be prepared to spend a lot of $$$$$. It's been that way for 15 years that I know of. The drum backspacing and etc determine you can't put a budget transplant in place. Accept it, or pick a whole 'nother rearend for your build. Cheaper with Mustang based stuff, but not by much. You can get creative with 93 Ford Crown Vic front brake rotors and LONGER MOROSO WHEEL STUDS to convert to rear disc brake with many other mods and decisions to be made because you made a mod choice. I've done it.
Front or rear? Mac's catalog lists the rears (11X2) except station wagon/Ranchero/sedan delivery. $104.95 a piece. No listing on the front though. JK
I want both front and rear drums. I got shoes for both and the rebuild kit for the springs but didnt include one spring that I need. The long one that holds tension from the top to bottom 6" lomg spring. I checked out that site (MAc's) but didnt find drums just shoes and lil stuff.
JK, I think the prob of $105 for repop drums vs drums for a 93 Chevy pickup have such a price difference, that acceptence is hard to swallow. The two drums almost look alike, so why can't they have a close price? Ford changed wheel flange to backing plate flange spacing and many more details to make that brake drum unique. Build a part that fits many applications to have high production, cost of production is lower. Build a part that has a narrow window of application and fewer sales demands, retool for production, labor $, selling of produced part will be higher. We are affected by simple economics. Even the guys that buy parts for 417 Donovan or 350 Chevy engines.
Hmmm. I have a printed catalog. Can't trust that new fangled interweb thing. Give em a shout for sure- 800 777 0948 is what's printed on the bottom of the catalog. JK
Eddie, with due respect, you are not going to be able to do any good at your local parts store. Please don't take this as busting you out or down. Just take this as experience. FWIW, I have the parts catalogs here at home with me to give you part numbers for what you want. I can't source want you want because they did make them at one time in m*** production. THEY produce stuff to make money with the iron THEY have bought to make parts with. I work at a parts store, and have for 22 years, and have built a hotrod with a 57-59 Ford Edsel rearend, and was not able to find brake drums 9 years ago. I can buy from Wagner, Bendix, Webb. Gunite, Meritor, Dorman's BrakeBest.
I bought a nine inch from a Guy a couple of months ago out of a fifty nine Edsel, which I have one of. Any how he yada about 6 58 edsels and said they were a five on five. The source seemed reliable but as you seen I deemed it a rumors as I hadn't looked at it first hand
Ranger /Pacer were same as ford 5x4 1/2 Corsair / Citations were like the Mercs My 57 Mercury Wagon is a 9" rear with 5x5 pattern... yep! 5x5 not 4.5 or 5.5
How do I figure out what diff and bolt pattern I have. For sure I have a 2.91 to 1 ration axle five lugnut. Never mind figured it out!
MAC sells correct REAR drums for all 58 Edsels ! 5x5 wheels for all expect STW`s B7A -1126 -A 5x 4 1/2 B7A -1126 -B for STW`s I checked those part numbers from ch***is body master katalog ! Front drum part numbers are: MG 1102-C Pacer & Ranger (expect STW`s) (5x5) MG 1102-D Corsair & Citation (5x5) B7A 1102-B STW`s (5x 4 1/2 )
almost true, STW`S came with 5x 4 1/2, everything else 5x5 EDIT: NOw I heard rumour that, there was an error on that parts book, STW`S came also with 5x5 bolt patterm, only drum was wider than in other models ?
I am able to use the rotors for now...... question I have now is front drums gave me trould to remove I had to remove it with hub. I pressed it out and warp the face for the drum. I dont want to hammer it straght would it be safe to press it and still use it?
I may have a set of good front drums around here off my 57 Ford. Been stored inside someplace in my shop. If interested PM me Ron
