I have been asked to help a fellow club member to get his 1958 Edsel going again. He pulled the original motor and replaced it with another engine of the same Ford family, 352 I think. The transmission selector worked before the engine swap. Now it seems to have a short to ground. When any selection is made other than the low gear choice the circuit breaker on the firewall cycles on and off,no action at the transmission. I have looked at the circuit diagram on Edsel.com and nothing jumps out at me. I did notice that he has not connected the actual linkage from the gear changing motor to the transmission. Could it simply be that the mechanisim is expecting to see movement? There is a large round "thingy" mounted on the rear of the trans with wires that appear to go to the relays on the firewall. Is this the sensor that "tells" the unit where it is? I am not at all familiar with Edsel teletouch ,but I do have somewhat of a electrical background. I am trying to do this as a favor for a fellow club member. Any help will be much appreciated. Lanny
Trying to fix a problem before everything is in place as it should be is kind of like expecting a light bulb to come on before it's screwed into the socket just because it's new. Those teletouch systems are marginal on a good day. Get everything back where it belongs and get a Motors Manual and follow the adjustment info there. Then see if your issue goes away. If not then trouble shoot. The Wizzard
The large round thing on the back of the trans is the inhibitor switch, it only stops you from putting it into Park and Reverse, doesn't need to be connected for the other gears to work, so they should. The motor will turn freely when told to, the linkage doesn't need to be connected. If the circuit breaker kicks, then there is a short somewhere or the motor picked now to die. Did you wire anything wrong? If you ground the motor and put 12V to the large red wire coming out of the motor itself, it should turn. if it doesn't, your issue is the motor. If it does turn, it could be the wiring inside the motor, the relays, etc. But, chances are it is the motor. More info would help me get a better idea what is wrong. I rebuild the motors, so if you have any issues, ask me. Private message would be best as I don't check the forums often. Peter
