nice looking car. btw when you're taking pictures of cars, it helps to turn your phone sideways, so the whole car fits into the picture. if this is a picture someone else took for you, then nm

The paint is the last thing I would mess with on that car...and then, only to get it clean and maybe shiny.

Well i didnt take a pic of the car this is from the seller. The paint doesnt look bad really and jts pretty solid so Its not like i need to do bodywork i just would like to learn how to do a decent paint job first hand.

Dude its mint. I'd say keep the six in it. Be different. Offenhauser sells performance six parts so you'll be good.

    I'd also get different wheels.

  4. Chrome reverse wheels on all for corners and pinners or black walls would be what I would do. Either lifted in the rear or droop the snout is a good idea but I would not get crazy with either one.

All that can happen down the road, get it running and stopping. Motor choice or style is something that can happen once the car lets you know what it wants. its not your car you are its owner. LOL

I just spent a month and about a grand getting a 59 Edsel running and driving, and I didn't do any cosmetic or hot rod work on it at all. Like they say, get it running and driving before you worry too much about making it "yours". Old cars can keep you busy and broke

  6. That's only a little less than half of what it was worth new. you didn't do too bad. LOL

  8. I found a page with suggested retail pricing before I said anything. I never knew what they were worth new. Most of what we fool with is way more than new price it seems.

Edsels haven't kept up with inflation, they're very affordable today.

  10. They were supposed to be affordable then, a Merc level car on a Ford man's diet. it just didn't work out that way, then there were mechanical/electrical issues and that killed 'em.

I have always liked this model. I think its called a pacer or the like but I don't know the year. its a little distorted but I think that will go away of you click it and expand it.

Well the ford needs a gas tank but the straight 6 (223 i think) runs with gas in the carb. I read somewhere about certain jeep gas tanks being used in these cars as replacements?

    What'cha got in there, kid?

  12. You can get a direct replacement factory style tank from Rock Auto including shipping under $200.oo. There part number is F34B. I bought a new one for my 59 and 2 more for two of my 57's. I wouldn't go any other way. Check them out.

Most every part is available for those, it is just a matter of how much money and time you want to spend on it.

Well unfortunately i didnt end up with the ford. Long story i went to look it it today and hopefully buy it and when i got there, it was in a pretty bad neighborhood and the house looked like it hadnt been taken care of at all and the gr*** was up to my knees. The car was in the front yard with the side the owner didnt send me a picture of just covered in rust. Mostly surface but it would have needed a decent amount of bodywork. I called the guy to let him know i was there to look at the car and he sounded very agitated. I cut my losses and decided not to take any chances in that part of town. Neat car but i refuse to buy from somebody that lies about their car. Who knows why else he was trying to get rid of it.

Trust your gut, I think you made the right call. When you walk into a scene that looks like it's from the movie "Seven" or "Silence of the Lambs" walk on. "It puts the lotion on it's skin..." There are always better deals out there as well. I've met a few gems over the years from my want ad fascination.

Dude, I think you said that you are seventeen and this is your summer before college, right?
PERFECT time for a ROAD TRIP! Put out a thread seeking a nearby hamber willing to sell you a running registered heap within your budget, you can leave em $300 deposit and you can FedEx them the plate when you get home, they mail you the $. Or take a Greyhound and bring the plate from your daily driver (um...of course I would never have done that myself...or at least admit publicly...) Really for $2000 any cool old heap will do. (Make sure you have AAA). I would do it for you if I had an extra sled.

The above is a great idea. State your budget and "wants", then maybe someone will step up with one you could drive home.

I don't have a pre-64 for sale at this time.

Don't be scared. There are cars in states beyond Illinois.

Wouldn't hurt to broaden your horizons a bit too. GM guy, are ya? Don't forget Buick,Cadillac, Olds, Pontiac. I've seen some really fun GM stuff, non-Chevy, many in the $2,000-2500 range. Look at higher prices and plan to make offers. People get in the mood to rid themselves of a car when it sits for some time. Good luck, and good for you following your instincts.

Yeah im also pretty into pontiac, olds and buick. Cadillac i also love but Cadillacs are pretty much too nice to me. I really like the typical every day man's cars.

Too bad about the 59 Ford.

These are a ways North, but might be worth checking into.

1956 Pontiac 2 door Ht. It needs floors, though.
    http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/cto/5618659716.html

1955 Ford 2 door. Nothing is mentioned about what the floors are like, and the rockers aren't easily seen in the photos. However, the surface rust pattern looks really sunburnt. Like it may have come from Texas? New Mexico? Etc.? However, that is just a guess.

Later you can stroke it out to 406 cheaply , and have a reliable street torquer that will cruise effortlessly on interstates but still have enough grunt to "pull the neighbours house off the foundations"

Well it sounds like you are back to square one, and thats not too bad a place to be.

You say you are off to study for 4 years, so my experience is that you really need to focus on your studies (and girls too) rather than on rebuilding a car. I tried to do both 30 years back, and got the girl but my Model A bucket never got finished. Tho I did eventually get the accounting degree I went looking for.

Just buy something thats already running, rather than something that takes you time and energy away from your studies.

You have the following 40 odd years to drag home "diamonds in the rough" which appear to others to be just coal. Hell I have a whole warehouse of such "coal" but while others see it like that, I see it all is "future project DNA - and you should never miss a chance to buy a steel Topolino body, or an old Hillborn 4 port injection or any of the other stuff I have squirreled away.

And your newly acquired qualifications increase your chances of employment, and a half decent pay packet to build that stuff.

    Good luck.
