I have very little experience with gm points. So bear with me. I picked up an early 70s Chevrolet 350 distributor that I want to use. I cleaned it it up and put in lighter springs, checked the vacuum advance and got a new set of points at rock auto. Will any set of points that have the Allen screw adjustment screw fit? The points that have the condenser built in, I think their uni points? Are they ok to use? I don't have any resistor wire, what ballast resistor and coil should I use? I have seen some where the resistor is mount to the coil bracket, what is a donor for these? Thanks all.
The points with the condenser built in first appeared in 1974 and will retro fit to any of the externally adjustable points back to 1957 if I remember correctly. In 1975 GM switched to the HEI. The points will operate almost any coil. Use the resistor that is specific to your vehicle. .bjb
You could look up "ballast resistor and coil for 1971 Impala" and should be fine for your application.
@dalesnyder ........did you have a specific reason for “putting in lighter springs”? If you are talking about the springs for the centrifugal advance (only springs I can think of) , that changes the advance ‘curve’,meaning the rate and rpm at which the distributor advances the timing. Depending on engine equipment or modifications, that could be a good thing...on the other hand it may not be.......”it depends”. A little more info about engine and power train...and use you intend to put it to will help clarify the need for that change. Ray
