those 1/2 inch drills are man-eaters. it was a 1/2 inch drill, right? no sympathy for 3/8, and we will be disappoined in you if it was a 1/4 inch. heal fast, I'm bunged up too.

  5. I feel your pain! I borrowed an old 1/2 inch from a friend that neglected to inform me that the switch stuck once in a while!!!!!! The bit stuck and the drill ripped out of my hand after twisting the old wrist mighty hard and then whacked me in the kneecap for good measure!!! Needless to say that drill was put to rest that night!:D

You need holes in something ('cept a burglar of course) and use a handgun instead of a drill I guess you'd better take what's coming to you;)

And I hope like hell you don't have a need for large caliber, I mean diameter holes either.....

Hope you all heal up soon!!

When I was an apprentice many years ago, the company had a great big old drill that turned about 50 RPM at the most. The journeyman had two of us (stupid) apprentices chuck up a big old core drill about 2 inches in Diameter to bore through the concrete floor of an office into the basemant. This thing had a huge handle on it where the switch was and a piece of pipe about a foot long screwed into the opposite side for another handle. We get this deal about 1/2 " into the floor and we're starting to relax and each of us sits on a handle to put a little weight on the drill thinking (or maybe not thinking) that it would drill faster like that. Well it went a few more turns and all of a sudden caught on a piece of re-rod and threw both of us about 20 feet(luckily) and since we had the switch locked on, the monster continued to turn untill it yanked the extension cord right out of the wall. Gave that thing some respect after that!

Well thank god you had the presence of mind to photograph the injury for the HAMB before you went to the dr.

I saw this pic on the net of a body and I was like that must be fake, then I recognized the fat layer just under your skin because I saw it when I cut through my hand with a grinder before! :D Gotta learn from your mistakes :)

Laying on my back while installing a trailer hitch with an old 1/2 inch drill. Bit bites into the frame, drill starts to rotate, right side of my body gets beat. After that, much more respect for that drill. Tougher than me.

  18. You might want to change your HAMB name. FLOP just may be a bit unlucky!

I broke the long bone in my hand that extends out from the ringfinger a few years ago with a Hitachi hammer drill while mixing concrete with a paddle attachment. It's not a terribly hard thing to do. Those things make some major torque. now as for the gunshot....WTF??????

Seriously, the exact thing happened to my ex wife. She was using a Dewalt 1/2 drill. It broke the same bone as yours. Sunk the knuckle too. She had 3 surgeries trying to repair it.

First surgery, screws and plates to mend the bone.
Second surgery, screws let loose, had to remove the whole works
Third surgery, long pins through the hand and passing out between the fingers

They removed the pins and it broke again a few days later. She just lives with less mobility now and a small bulge on the back of her hand.

I use a 1/2" drill like I hold the steering wheel in my race car. With purpose and with my thumbs pinned back. Its not a matter of when, its a matter of how hard its going to spin out. Always have an exit strategy planned for your hands man!!!

I hear ya on the exit strategy. I also have started wearing gloves no matter what in the shop. Probably won't stop a broken bone, but when your hand gets pinned by the drill handle you don't get tore up as bad.

I also learned the hard way you never hold anything in the drill press. You always clamp it.

    Gunshot wound....need more info.

I'm borrowing a neighbor's 1/2" Makita, the thing is 10 years old at least...but the thing is a powerhouse. Seems like that thing grabs all the time when it's breaking on through the metal. I think that I have trained my cat-like senses to immediately drop it like it's hot at the first sign it grabs....too many past injuries to my hands. Obviously they're not *that* cat-like.

1986, remodeling a home. On a 10' ladder drilling with a hole saw above my head. The house was built in the 20's and the lumber was hard as a rock from the cured pine. I must have hit a dried sap pocket because that drill glued itself to the lumber, wrapped my hand in the cord very quickly, keeping my finger on the trigger. It slung me off the ladder and I was hanging by the drill from the ceiling turning like a 200 lb ceiling fan. The cord popped out of the wall as I wound up. Torn rotator cuff on that one. It was an old 1/2 in Milwaukee.
