Hey Judd, What's shakin? Here are a couple pics of the finished product.
It took forever to find stock headers that would actually fit inside the frame.

Good thinking. Combining this idea with a good looking shroud would help hide the electric fan even more. Anybody have any ideas for how to disguise the SOUND of the electric fan (mine sounds like an angry shop vac). Thanks for sharing you idea. Jack.

Great detail for the fan. Now if there was only something a guy could do about mismatched air cleaners...

Very impressive, there are a ton of older fans which don't function well, so you would be just salvaging some cool pieces. I am in the vintage furniture business and appreciate saving older items but would have no problem sacrificing one fan to get the killer look you achieved. Using the fans original blades would probably be to heavy for the composite frame of the electric. Kudos to the preservation of the vintage fans! The nailhead looks really super, kick *** air cleaner setup. Thanks for sharing a neat idea.-Sololobo

FANTASTIC>IT really fits the theme! YOU DA MAN!.Mike

  18. Thanks for the side view pic.

I was wondering if you could do some of the stuff I did on my 455 Buick in a 32 so you could run a mechanical fan, but the water pump nose on your engine is really low.
455 Buicks have the fan low and to the left, but not as low as the Nailhead in your car.

Lots of neat aspects about your car.
Honesty for one, no reason some of the stuff it takes to run our cars can't be out in the open instead of hidden away somewhere.

Cool steering box mount, but what's really interesting is the headlight bar.
It looks to be made from oval tubing.

That is awesome! I have always hated electric fans. I would let my car oveheat before I would install one. I am going to have to steal your idea. Is it copyrighted? Now all we need to figure out is how to make them not sound like electric fans:)

    Me too!
I had absolutely no room on my 34 for a stock fan. I hated using the fugley black electric one. Just doesnt look good on an open car.
This gives it a more traditional approach. Thanks! I like the center of yours!
Hard to find a cool big one. Usually you can find the antique smaller ones about 8-12" in diameter but finding an 18-20 inch one will be a chore. Time to go flea marketing!

Man that's a great idea. Stuff like this is why I love the HAMB, but can someone tell me how this is different than Olds valve covers on a SBC or "faux patina"?
Sometimes the HAMB is a hypocritical place.
    I guess I just don't understand.

Count, Good point, I'm glad you brought it up.
You see, there is a difference. This idea is born out of necessity, not trickery. In other words, A SBC with rocket heads is trying to make you believe it an olds motor. Trickery,... the owner could just put a real olds in his car. Fake rust,... again, trickery, making one believe his fibergl*** car is made of metal. An electric fan is something that lots of people "have" to use, they have no other choice. And I'm not fooling anybody that my fan is not what it is, I'm just making it look better. do you see the difference?

After getting ideas and advice from the HAMB for 3 years I have got to say that this is one of my favorites!! THANKS MAN!!

  28. Well said and I agree.

As a twist though, I'm a bit confused about the use of color.

I'm unsure why you painted it the silver colour, I imagine that it was to visually 'highlight' the screen, and distract you from the fan behind it, this is a great use of color.

    But...

If you look at the engine bay as a package (see your above photo) you have a 'first impressions' moment where you see the 'package' as such, to which, you then begin to look closer and notice the detail.

Now what I'm reffering to is that I would have painted the added screen black, as visually, when I first look at the engine bay I want to principally 'notice' the engine, not the engine and that fan cover, purely because I would want people to treat the screen as a 'detail' element, as that's what I believe it is, a neat detail, not a 'trick'. This again is controlled by the way you use the colors, the finishes etc.

    Like always, Less = more.

For example, if you wanted to push that line of thought, you could either paint or 'shrinkwrap' in black your radiator hose clamps, with the goal of using the brighter colors to 'highlight', and the darker colours will fade into the background, thus minimalising the visual package. As a example of what I mean, look at the engine bay of that 28 rpu that 'Pinkees Rod Shop did' that was illustrated everywhere.

Anyhow, congrats again on your use of 'alternative methods' to achieve a neat goal.

    Cheers,

    Drewfus

  29. Man why not just just hide the ****er all together? Put it b/w the rad and grille insert and bingo.........

DONE....and NOTHING to see in the engine bay...
