Technical Electric Spedometer/Sending Unit

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 345 DeSoto, Oct 14, 2018.

  1. Been awhile since I Posted, but here goes. I've got a Studebaker Sky Hawk that I'm Resto Modding. Question(s) are about installing a SW Electric speedometer (Deluxe Speedometer: P/N 82698), which sending unit to go with it and what type...I have absolutely NO knowledge of either. The transmission is a GM 200-4R, the rear is a 3.92 Dana 44. What is a GPS unit, how/where does it get installed, what other sender would go with this speedo, and where/how would it be installed? Which would be the best way to go with these senders, and what else would I need? Thanks in advance, for ANY help and/or suggestions...

I have a Jegs (Intellitronix brand markings on the inside) GPS speedometer in my semi-off-topic 1962 Volvo 544 (looks like a 1946 Ford sedan). The antenna unit is on my dash board, and the little control box is under the dash. I am unimpressed with this unit. It is totally unreliable at speeds under 20 MPH. Also, the speed shown lags the actual speed by a few seconds. At a constant speed, the displayed speed closely agrees with the speed shown in the cell phone app. It looks like this:

The advantage is that the unit is calibrated right out of the box. But, it does not work in tunnels and parking garages.

I have used electronic speedometers (VDO brand) in off topic Ford and IH trucks. I am very happy with the accuracy of these units, once a proper calibration is accomplished. Bought the sender that matched the transmission, and ran the wires to the speedometer. There is a procedure to calibrate the speedometer using a measured mile.

Get a good look at the speedometer output connector on your GM 200-4R transmission and than buy a SW electric sending unit that mates with that connector.

Just put an electronic trigger on the trans, and be done with it.

GPS speedometers are a gimmick that needs to pass.

I'm using a Classic Instruments Sky Drive and a S/W deluxe speedometer. Five years without a problem with the sky drive BUT I have had 3 S/W speedometers and all 3 have had various problems with TERRIBLE support from the factory. Stewart Warner, once a standard in the industry builds cheap junk now days as far as I am concerned. All my other gauges are old leftovers I had on the shelf when I closed my shop. They work perfectly. The speedometer is current manufacture and nowhere near the quality of old. I am having Classic Instruments make me a speedometer with S/W style fonts and my initials in S/W style at the bottom. S/W allegedly has a warrant Classic has a 7 year warranty. Beware of new Stewart Warner .

I bought a SW wings speedo, electronic style. The tech said it would read the electronic signal from my T-5 tail shaft and...wait for it...it worked perfectly. You have to press a little button when you turn on the ignition, drive one mile exactly and press the button again and calibration is complete. Just that easy.

Of course until I actually could drive the car one mile the speedo was pegged at 1,000,000 miler per hour and every time I turned the ignition on while I was testing the wiring the odometer was spinning. It says I have 90 miles on the car, but only 30 of them are actual. I should have disconnected the speedo power during that time period. Oh well.

The thing is, mine worked just like they said and so does the tach and other gauges. I'd buy them again.

I have a sending unit from speedway on my pickup. its quite accurate, and even though the book says it doesn't work when covered by metal, is under my metal dash, in my metal cab. It does not always get a signal, bug 90% of the time or more. Easier than calibrating to the transmission, I can change gears or tire sizes and it works the same without calibrating again. Im a fan
