I'm wanting to use an electric tachometer with a Vertex (internal coil) mag. There are a couple converters on the market that will handle changing the signal to a square wave and read the mag. Anyone have any 1st hand experience with either the Autometer 9118 or the MSD version? I have a Bosch FST 8050 and a Smith's RVC 2816-00CA neither of them are traditional but I do have them in my stash and do not have a cable drive bottom for my magneto. Thanks.
Don't recall the part number, but I had an Autometer Monster tach in a race car I ran years back. A small Chevy with a Vertex magneto for ignition plower. Not a problem if that's what you're asking. Just look into the Autometer part numbers OR...give them a call to verify that your particular tach will work with a mag. Mike
no experience with them but used a Stack Clubman with my vertex and it worked......a bit pricy though
The Stack tach is a bit pricey but does come highly recommended. I'm wanting to use the Smith's actually. I do have an email in to Autometer. Thanks.
I ran a Cirello "Frankenstein" magneto, the Autometer converter, and a regular Mallory tachometer on the hemi in my dirt car (avatar). It worked fine.
I have a internal coil Vertex and I tried the Autometer set up but could not seem to get it to work and I had the original Sun tach that used the Mag. sender box. Sent it all out to Williamson and have used it happily for 12 years now. I have a Autometer monster tach and didn't like the way it looked in my MG. Pat
Yes Marty, Spud did the tune up on the mag and he recommended the Stack. Thanks Pat, I have a note in to Autometer.
I'm running an old Stewart Warner with a "Mag" sending unit on mine and it works great. Nice unit's, both tach and sender, are pretty common on E-Pay. That's where I got the one in my heap.
Tubman I did not say that correctly. I had trouble using the Autometer with the magneto and the Autometer 9118 so I went with the complete Sun tach and sending unit. Sorry for the confusion. Pat
