I rewired my 54 - the fourth car I've wired. Never had this problem before. Used a kit. Everything went real good but have a headlight problem. When I put the headlights on (low beam) I get feedback to the high beam circut - indicator light goes on but is dim. Headlight low beam are also dim. High beam doesn't seem to be as bright as I wouls think also. Checked and rechecked grounds - even but an extra temporary grounds to try to find problem. New dimmer switch, even tried another new dimmer switch. In checking with a test light, I get juice at both high and low beam circuits when the bulbs are connected. If bulbs are not connected, the juice at the dimmer switch is ok (When high beams are on, no juice at low beam and vice versa). WTF is going on and how do I fix it? Even tied a different headlight but have the same situation
Paul - Check your wires going to the plug on the bulb. It sounds like you have the ground switched with one of the power feeds. It sounds like the high beam and ground are switched. Mutt
re-trace the wires to the plug on the headlamps themselves[and dim switch].wire could be crossed-[its done by a human]-right?
You may have the ground mixed up with one of the filaments in th socket. Looking at the 3 plugins in the socket like a "|_|" the base _ is the high beam, then ground->|_|<-low beam. It gets confusing as to whether it's looking at or looking behind, but that should be where the wires go looking at the socket where the bulb plugs in not looking at the back where the wires are... If the ground is in the wrong spot they will feed back through each other doing various weird things, among them like you described. Oh, uno mas, they switched them around on Halogen bulbs I heard...
Make sure one of your bulbs isn't shorted internally. It happens more than you'd think, but few people ever think to check that. Anything inside the bulb allowing current to cross paths can do it. REAL common on 4x4s and harsh ridng cars, especially in 1157 style tail/stoplight bulbs! Check for a short or mis-cue in the headlight sockets as suggested. The fact that you say the dimmer switch checks out fine with the bulbs disconnected leads me to suspect either a bulb problem or a bulb socket problem.
Thanks everyone - went out this morning and checked out the connectors and they were wrong. Thanks especially DRJ who gave me the diagram. Don't know why, but this was the first time out of four that I screwed this part up.
