I just inherited a Harmon Collins dual coil distributor, crab style. Although, I crave the look and performance (mostly look) of the dual coil, I don't want to give up the reliability of my single coil electronic ignition. Does any know of an electronic module for this thing. I checked Pertronics site and no dice.
I'm not aware of anybody doing a dual-coil electronic setup (as there is really no need for one). One could modify an HC distributor to have multiple pickups and create a dual-coil . . . but it would be a bit of precision work and it would require a distributor machine to validate the sync of the two pickups. Also, the HC yellow mid-plate is very susceptible to secondary leakage, so there might be modifications required to prevent/control this issue. In the end, just not worth the effort (my opinion - and I've worked on a lot of HC distributors!).
Don’t waste the coolness of the H-C on an electronic ignition. The inner cap and rotor aren’t made anymore. Don’t ruin them by modifying beyond use.
If you really are set on doing this, the best way is to run it as a "dummy"dual coil. Perhaps an early Ford pertronix may fit the HC distributor. If it does just install it and run it as a conventional single coil electronic ignition. Just remove the wiring, etc. that's not needed. No damage done to the unit; just remember to save the extra parts. I agree with the other guys, though. If you're not going to use it right sell it to someone who will.
moved this to the hokey ass message board. The traditional hot rod forum is no place for a discussion about electronic ignition.
