Jim, that's not a whole lot different than mine. I Am wondering how much angle I have to add. I was planning on just making either a 45 or a 90 degree bend.

I don't know if 45 or 90 would be better. I had a 87 suburban for a while, it had the pipes at 90 degrees, never any issues with exhaust smell, and the windows leaked)

I think the important thing is that it kicks the fumes out to the side, instead of letting them get into the low pressure area right behind the car.

Maybe that S curve puts a swirl in the g***es to shoo them away.

I'm surprised the exhaust shop didn't warn you about the exhaust g***es coming in the back. When Dad tried to get the exhaust shop to do rear exiting duals on his suburban, they wouldn't do it for the very reason that you are talking about.

No, my exhaust guy didn't say squat. Of course, I did tell him what I wanted. I'll make sure he knows now. I'll tell him how it almost killed me, right before I ask the price.

My wagon exits out each side behind the rear tires. I don't get much exhaust smell unless the rear window is down and I haven't opened the vent windows a bit. Most of the time, weather permitting, I run with the rear window down slightly for a nice breeze. The side exhaust will definitely help your problem.

Just repeating what has been said. Get it out the side. I have a O/T beater 72 blazer. virtually no seal at the back hatch. exhaust exits out the side behind the rear wheels.

No exhaust smell what so ever.

If you exit the pipe right behind the tire and the tread ever lets go, it will bang the pipe into the lower quarter and bend it up a few inches. Ask me how I know. There's always more to think about than we think about.

Don't know if 45 vs 90 degree matters, but the LTD and Impala wagons I've owned both had 90-degree tailpipes that exited right behind the tires from the factory.

Root I found a new exhaust shop. 405 muffler located at 89th and shields. They did the exhaust on a friends 49 chevy truck cheap and did a great job.

Is the turn-out behind the wheel something that should be considered for most cars? I have a '53 Chevy 2 door sedan that makes my clothes smell a little after driving. I'm not absolutely sure that the firewall is completely sealed so it could be that, but my exhaust does exit out the back past the bumper.

    Root,

Many years ago I put a new exhaust on Clarence. Both pipes exited the rear centered under where the bumper would be if there was a bumper. Next day drove to York (PA) from Missouri for NSRA mini-nats. Fumes smoked us out. Drove most all the round trip with windows down. Upon return had the exhaust rerouted to exit the sides just in front of the rear tires. End of problem.

Maybe this applies to your wagon and maybe it doesn't. My $0.02.

Dads '71 Lemans wagon will really make you sick if the rear window is cracked open. We found the exhaust must exit out the side, right behind the tire or the exhaust finds it way back in no matter how well the window seals. Our old 9 p***enger'65 Safari wagon was the same way.

For long trips, try adding a cheap-o chrome tip to get the exh out away from the car.

The cure in the 50's was to keep two kids in the back seat absorbing the fumes before they got to the driver. Cheaper than canaries, who required continual replacement. Oddly, when these kids reached college in the '60's they all had a desperate craving for drugs of any sort...

I had a nice 1962 Buick Invicta Wagon I couldn't stand to drive with the exhaust out the back like yours and didn't believe what everyone told me about it being straight out the back causing the problem but after turning it to the side it was good even with the rear window down. Mine was even worse if I opened a front window as it ****ed in even more fumes then.

There is a small gap on the top of the rear window that appeared after installing new gl***. I plan on sealing that up soon.
Thats all it takes and you have found your problem. Fix that and then, if needed, re-route the exhaust exit. g

Thanks guys. I would have never thought about this. I ***umed as long as it went all the way out the back I would be good. As soon as I get home from this trip, I'll get it down to the muffler shop and have them knock it out.

Back in the day I had a few 60's wagons. I found if I didn't have the fresh air vents open or the heater on, which would pressurize the p***enger area, it would **** in exhaust fumes into the p***enger compartment.

I had a 95 Caprice wagon with an LT-1, I lowered it with impala SS wheels. I would ride around with the back window open sometimes, especially if people were riding in the rear facing seat. I had mufflers and chrome tips put on it, and had them run it out to the rear bumper... I could never drive with the rear gate open again!! G***ed me out. And, if it wasn't latched all the way, it would **** fumes too.

This is one reason I'm going to run the exhaust on the 40 out in front of the rear wheel, because of all the rust back there I don't want to gas out my kids.
