Hey gang, the cable at the end of the handle on our 56 Ford has frayed and won’t the handle go far enough down to fully release the e brakes. I’ve backed them off under the car on the adjustment that’s on the loop in the center. I’ve ordered the correct cable but am wondering what I’ll run into after lowering the handle mechanism. It looks like I’ll remove the adjusting nut on the cable under the car first and pull a clip. Is there any thing I’m going to run into on the handle mechanism to get the ball I see on the replacement cable out? Thanks.
On my car, my front cable was frozen up. There is a very hard to reach clip close to the floor that holds it in. Actually putting it back in was harder than getting it out. I had no carpet in the car at the time, so access was good. What does the manual show, if you have one? My release is a lever under the dash, just tap it and CLICK, the e-brake is released. I recall some having the cable run up over a little wheel.
Thanks, I have an exploded view of all the parts with their numbers so I have a pretty good idea how everything is attached. I’ll do the bottom first so the cable will be slacked and try to remove the pin that hopefully will allow the cable to be removed. I have added AC with a full lower panel under the dash which will need to come off. It’s not a big deal since I’m the one who made it but ***bersome. Being old (me) is the worst part of it.
Easier than I thought. Hardest thing was getting the car in the air about 8” in front and 5” in the rear to remove the cable adjust nut and clip under the car. The handle inside has 2 Phillips screws at the dash and there are 2 nuts in the wheel well. At the firewall inside there are 2 sheet metal screws holding the cable end centered. Everything pulled out from inside. The new cable is a little tricky to get into the mechanism but anyone mechanical all can figure it out. $50 and a couple of hours and it was done.
