41 flathead, have the front clip off going to pull motor and trans any tips? I am confused on how the trans separate's I have the upper and lower cover off will the trans just pull off then? off the u joint?
if that's an open driveline, you'll remove the driveshaft. if it's a torque tube, you'll disconnect at trans and unbolt the rear end and slide the whole thing back to remove, unless you want to yank the engine and trans as a unit--then you'll need to get the front end up higher for the trans to clear the ground. the trans bolts on to the back of the engine/oil pan. its mount is circular. don't forget to remove all the little stuff--speedo cable, shift rods, wiring, etc. hope that is of help.
You are in good shape having the front clip off the car, makes things easier. If you want to pull the trans, leave it attached to the engine and pull them together. In that case. front motor mounts center bolt removed. All linkages for clutch, throttle, choke, etc, wiring, fuel line etc. disconnected. At the rear of the trans is a mount on either side and a cup like affair that holds the torque tube to the trans case. Remove the bolts from the mounts and from the u-joint cup.....Once that cup is detached from the trans case, the driveshaft will slip free of the u-joint yoke inside. I think that about covers it. If you want to detach the trans, there are about eight bolts that attach the trans case to the engine bell housing. With those removed, the trans can be pull free of the engine. Ray
You might check and see if the anti-chatter rods are still in the car .......engine and ****** not going anywhere if they are there.
And...once you are ready to pull...do it in small stages of movement, and scrutinize everything at each step. There is damn well going to be a wire or connection you missed somewhere! Do you have the floorboard out? That is actually a big help on '41-48 Fords, as you can see and reach everything. Can be easy to remove or absolutely horrible, depending on rustiness of the numerous screws and whether you have a heater in the way. With board out, you may want to start removal of engine and trans together for first couple of inches, then unbolt trans from engine to be lifted out later. This will reduce complicated angling and tilting to get the lump out.
floor is out front clip is off motor and trans should pull out with a bit of talking nice.....well maybe a curse word or two. have the covers off the U joint and should pull apart?
well motors out trans out all in one peace... now how do you take the clips from the u joint looks like they have some play in them. cant seem to see how they come out?? any idea's???
Are you talking about dis***embling the U-joint to repair it? While there are repair kits out there, it's not a whole lot more money to just replace the joint with a new one. The U-joint has a single bolt holding it on the transmission main shaft. Just remove it (the u-joint) and replace it.
If the play is entirely lateral sliding on the cross, that does not matter and cannot be eliminated anyway. Look only for play within bushing. Somebody post page 564 of Model A service bulletin for illustrated dis***embly directions...this is accomplished by the simplest of violence, but exact process is hard to verbalize. Basically you need to summon up HATRED for the clip. Do NOT dis***emble or replace anything on an original joint if there is no ply in bushing.
