Engine angle, what should it be?

Since this is my first build I have made a few little mistakes along the way.(ok a bunch) While mocking in the trans crossmember and motor mounts I put them in with the frame at level. Now i have the ch***is rolling and the engine and trans in, the motor sits at a pretty good downward rake, 5 degrees, as does the ch***is. Ive been trying to come with a spacer to fit between the bisquit and front mount, but it looks like ****. I need to raise it at least 1 3/4" to get the motor at level. Can I get away with engine rake at that much or should I go ahead and raise it.
Lesson learned set your ch***is up with the rolling stock you plan on running or a close equivelant.

Im afraid its all gonna have to be done in the front. I lowered the ****** a bit by making a new mount. As far as dropping the crossmember down I might as well start all over. If I change the crossmember then I need to change the crossmember for the ladder bars, because the driveshaft will not clear.

I dont know what happend along the way but I tried leveling the carbs, by the time the carbs are level it look like a fuel altered with engine so damn high. So the question is what angle would be acceptable.

I ain't 100% sure but without your carbs being level you might have trouble setting your floats and performance issues, but I have seen the 3 percent mentioned before but that was for your drive shaft angle

  8. Troy- usually the side mount thru bolt is level with the top of frame rail or a shade higher.
Looks like your trans mount is the one that was higher than usual I think.
Id make a MOTOR MOUNT spacer from 2" pipe welded and ground smooth at frame with a heavy washer on top[W nut welded to its bottom]
    THAT SHOULD EVEN IT UP

I go with what Choprods suggests, and maybe even a hole in it to match the hairpins and axle? [IMG]

Just put it where it looks good. In the early sixties we used to jack the back of the car up so high you could see the front bumper from the drivers seat and they never ran any different. If it is low in the front when standing still it will be perfect when you floor the loud pedal.

i ran into this problem also...i just ignored the carb and aligned the crank line with the driveshaft line...i figure at the end i can make a tapered block for the carb to sit level...i was told by an old guy that when they built track roadsters and midgets they would try to get the axle lines frame lines driveshaft lines and crank lines all on the same plane and then make blocks for the carbs that made it level front to back and slightly angled leftto keep fuel in for the corners

    I don't see what's the big deal,

I always seem to do everything two or three times before I get it right [IMG]

when it comes right down to it the motor doesn't care what angle it sits at,

as long as the oil gets to the sump.

the carbs do need to sit level or close to it when static, so that they are able to take acceleration, braking, and cornering without starving or flooding.

I would probably make new mounts.

    is the rear hung?

  14. About what I was suggesting except for I meant weld it to the steel mount off frame and sit the cushion on top of that,,,,,,Remember its just a long distance opinion-I bee wrong a lot myself! [IMG]

honestly i would keep the valve covers level with the frame rails .....if you run the motor level at the carb bases it runs down hill in the back it doesnt look so good...

This spacer Greezy posted look sanitary and "like part of it"
I;d go that way, as far as how much, there's another item you left off the problem and that's a fan that doesn't hit the top or bottm radiator hoses, so put the fan, radiator and hoses on it and adjust the height of the front of the engine so the fan is centered in the radiator (electric fans just don't look traditional) then if the carbs are still off level take them off and measure the angle the are off and how much lower the front one is from the rear and cut some aluminum spacers on the angle to compensate the angle and height difference.
I've done that on several cars, as much as 6º angle.
That's what I have in my 40 GMC and it's been running with the engine on about the same down hill angle as yours for over a decade.

I put the fan on Dr.J and am actaully able to run my big fan now. Its centered in the radiator. All is well in the world now. Until the next glitch.

Bugs me when I see photo build ups of guys **** on here, and they seem to do in three days what just took me a year to get together.

Either I'm reeaal slow and stupid, or lots of guys leave the heartache and ****ups out of their posts [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
Here's my two year nightmare of ****-ups, re-welds, re-plans, chops and changes:
