I am refreshing my Caddy 331 and want to get opinions on ***embly lube. I have the original cam and lifters that look great, should I smear them down with ***embly lube or just use some good ZINC oil for a break in period? What about the rod and main bearings, any lube on those or just trust the oil? I am just doing bearings, rings, a cylinder hone and timing chain.....any suggestions?
For the rings I just use oil, for most everything else, Lubriplate #105 ***'y lube. For non-roller cam/lifter break-in I like to use moly cam lube. 105 is good stuff, I've used it on everything from stock and modified gas engines to 600 HP diesels and never had a problem. I also fill the oil pump with it, by hand turning the pump as I squirt it in the feed side.
If you are using the original cam and lifters....and you didn't mix them up....you don't have to worry about break-in as you would with new parts. I'd ***emble everything else with motor oil and pre-lube it before firing it. I pre-lube EVERY engine I build.
