I just tore down my LS7, the motor has a race history (IE has had alot of modifications) so i want to make sure that the Main and Rod bearings are still standard, i haven't done a whole lot of motors but i know on the recent ones I've done "Standard" or "STD" is usually stamped on the bearings. The bearings I removed (Clevite 77's) don't have that, but they have a number followed by a "P", the guy at the parts store (who i have zero faith in) said that indicated they're standard. Anybody know if this is true or have a way to confirm? Thanks -Justin
about the only way i know for sure is to measure the crank with a micrometer..then compare that to stock. you should also reinstall the main and rod caps and measure the inside with a snap gauge to check your clearances you said the motor has had a lot of modifications..so who knows all what has been done to it. measure each journal too...i once tore apart a sbc i found that one main journal was .010 undersize and the rest stock maybe someone else will have a better idea
The undersize bearings will have the undersize stamped on them, standard size may or may not say STD You were gonna mic the crank anyways, right?
btw is this an old 454 LS-7? They had treated crank journals and generally don't wear out unless something goes seriously wrong.
Yeah it's a 454 (i think it's a '73). The only reason I'm rebuilding it is because someone had added additional head bolts that bolted through the intake port and into the water jacket, where they corroded and i had to drill em out, of course the last one turned into a huge battle and resulted in alot of metal shavings. I used to have a micrometer but it seems to have walked away, i guess this is an exuse to buy another one.
