In case the OP needs to research DIAL CALIPERS, Google Starrett, another high quality caliper brand is Mitutoyo. And yes, store them closed and don't lay lem down on the plastic dial cover. Also make sure to not misplace the little tool (included) to reset dial to zero, it's the only way to reset them correctly.

  2. The old cat dozers had black sleeves or liners. very hard and the just didn't wear out. You could hone all day and never put a scratch in them. The piston ring lands would wear out and the chrome wear from the top rings. but those cyls never wore out. So they would regroove the ring lands. new rings and add a spacer below each ring. Did a old D7 and it burned more oil than before. So the owner had me get a big load of timber in front and push it in a higher gear lugging it pretty hard. He then poured fine dust from a pre cleaner into the intake. and the rings seated. Ive patched badly worn cyls by getting oversize rings and cutting them down till the ring gap was ok. then flattening copper wire and placing it in the ring groove before installing the rings. that way the piston didn't move around and clatter when the engine was cold. It was mostly on worn out diesel engines. We called those trucks Auction sale trucks. Never sold them to anyone we knew or lived in the area. Nope took them to a auction a few hundred miles away and let then sell. Ive had diesels that didn't have enough compression to fire . After my patch job sounded great.
