Finally getting a '30 Model A build under way. I'm not going down the SBC/SBF route that's for sure. After looking in to the various Hemi, Nailhead, Caddy, Olds etc options, I have decided to go with either a DeSoto Hemi 330 or a Studebaker 289. Having located one of each I need to decide which one to purchase. Both will require some rebuilding, re-bore etc. Any thoughts from you knowledgeable guys out there? All help appreciated.

  2. If you go with the Stude mill will be a little harder to find parts for as they are not a real popular motor for hot rods. The hemi will be easier to adapt to your ****** of choice. But I'm sure that someone makes adapters for studes also.

The hemi will weigh a little more but unless you have driven your A bone with a lighter motor, or have a chance to get on a skid pad you will never know the difference.

Looks wise the Stude will resemble a caddy motor (same designer). The hemi will just look like a hemi.

I'd probably be happy with either one.

Studes came with T10s from the factory. So did Fords and they used the same bolt pattern. Guess what? And lots of Studes came with T85 three speeds so bellhiusings are not that hard to find. Try finding a stick shift DeSoto. Pretty much stuck with looking for a Dodge truck bellhousing. I drive a Stude and find parts easy to get. Lots of NOS support out there and repro if you can't find new. PS The factory blown 289s storm.

There is no replacement for displacement.

    Except for blowers.
