so yesterday I decide to take my 63 lincoln down to the gas station to fuel up, I let it warm up for about 10 minutes and procede to drive down the street. after putting half a tank in my ride I try and start it but it was acting funny so I walked in the store to look for a carb cleaner. As i walk out I notice there is smoke comming out from under my hood:eek: I pop the hood to find my air filter is on fire and dripping melting oil/plastic into my carb i grab the filter off with my hands and fling it into the mud puddle opposite of the pumps.

So was it a small missfire or is Edelbrock air cleaner a no go?

That's not the first time I have seen one of those style air cleaners catch fire.
Any backfire will light that foam on fire much easier than it will a round paper element type.

I would ditch the triangle and go round.

Glad it didn't do any more damage than the air cleaner.

    Amen to that!

My buddy had one of those on his mulletriffic Cutl*** when we were in high school...

He wasn't running a hood and had the same thing happen so we pulled over and he quickly jerked the thing off but caught his sleeves on fire.

He got arrested for waving his firearms around.

Thank you folks, I'll be here all week. Tip the wait staff.

Edelbrock ought to make a public apology for ever selling a POS air cleaner like that. Add one more to the list of bad experiences with them.

    Be glad it wasn't worse.

in addition... they break down over time and small pieces of the foam fall into the carb...

I had one catch fire, while I was working on the car luckily. I saw another one burn a car to the ground about 1/2 mile from my house. Edelbrock needs to recall those ****ers or make them out of Mesquite or Hickory so you could grill after a backfire.

I had one of those also on my Willys Jeep in highschool. One backfire thru the carb and instant Flambe....Its amazing how fast you can move when your ride is on fire.

Drop base air cleaner from Speedway. Aluminum...I think they're in the roundy-round catalogs.
I've got one on my '62 Suburban. Not for hood clearance, I like how it covers the carb. I also put a 1-inch spacer on the intake, and didn't want the air cleaner sticking up that extra inch. Finally, I like having all that air filter element.
If you're familiar with K&N's Flow Control style, it's comparable to that, but made of spun aluminum.

  19. I had one of those burn up on me too a long time ago. They don't filter the air worth a **** either. Sand and dirt sort of naturally winds up on top of them and eventually just falls down into the carb throat. I had used it for hood clearance. I think I replaced it with a Moroso that had a base that dropped down low around the carb and only stuck up about an inch above the top of the carb.

A few years back, I sold a '70 GTO Judge Convert. to an old school friend of mine....he did some work to it, replaced the top( which it needed) and for some reason, removed the ram air filter ***embly and put one of those god awfull Edelbrock filters on it....As luck would have it, he saw me B.S.ing a buddy, threw the car in neutral, and revved the big old Poncho up...it burped back, set the filter on fire(unbeknown to any of us) & a little while after he'd parked, smoke began pouring out from under the fenders,hood...dash...EVERYWHERE!!! I watched it burn to the ground....nothing but the decklid, rear bumper and the last four foot of the rear quarters made it....if ya have one of 'em...pitch it NOW!!!

I had one go up in flames too. Those are junk, they look cool and only keep large bugs and mice out, everything else go right through including fire.

  23. K&N.

Both the filter and the base & top.

Never a problem with filtering - does an excellent job - or with backfires.

I second that. I have one of the k&n tops as well. Had some pretty strong burps through it and it never did anything more than blacken the bottom.

It's a MIRACLE Edelbrock hasn't been sued for somebody's car burning down. Cl*** Action Sued. Those are unsafe as hell, seems like 75% of those things catch fire, and the only thing saving the other 25% is they get removed by wary owners before combustion

wow ive never heard of that many people having the same problem with these, Ive seen this happen at the track several times.
You would think Edelbrock would change the design a bit or maybe change the composition of the filter...sheesh, dangerous!

Instead of just trying to find something to stand up to a backfire...when and WHY did it backfire? When you just shut the car off?
