My only comment would be was that the smallest winch he could get. 3000Lbs would be a pretty heavy engine, and it's got some multipliers. I'd love to have it. Straight up and down lift rather than the angle you get with a standard cherry picker. Not to mention the fact that it can swivel the engine away from the car/truck. I'd like to build one.

  3. It’s quite extensive, however, with the size of the front tires, it would not fit under a Freightliner, much less a car. Ok, set the car on stands, but I still believe you would have trouble fitting it under a car.

I'm seeing the same issue w/the big tires getting under anything. Also don't think swinging an engine sideways is going to result in any kind of useful stability. But on soft material, like the sand I have, I could make that work, w/some modification. Seems way too lightweight. Sure looks easier to move around than the one I built out of the racers' plans years ago...

  5. Would be useless to me. I'd have to cut it up and rework it

  7. Might work good for mower's, other then that , I think it's a piece of elaborate shit.

I think it would be a useful shop crane/lift, but as mentioned it falls short on getting it under a vehicle.
I can see coming in from the side of a PU, grabbing the load. All good.

  9. The 360 degree swivel feature is useless, it will tip over once it turns past a certain point, and that certain point is not very far away. Other's have already mentioned the issue with the tires. An 'A' frame hoist does the same thing.

I would bet that was not built to be an engine hoist but some other specific lifting job, like the hydraulic jack is to break whatever free and the winch to raise it, just a guess.

Check your local heavy electrical motors rebuilders/rewinders shop.
They may have a older standby unit.
That's where I got mine. Better built than the one shown and smaller tires.

Someone thought they had a great idea, built it, found out it doesn't really work as intended, and now wants to pawn it off on someone else, so they can get their money back out of it.

I like the idea of pulling it behind a vehicle with a hitch.
As far as the big tires fitting under , yeah that wouldt work for me. I can only hope the come off easy and get replaced with some iron one for the job. At least thats what I would do.
I have been looking lately on FB marketplace and these things, like everything else have gone way up in price it seems?

Diesel creek has the dream hoist, but hasn't installed it yet. He just pulled a Cummins with another piece of heavy equipment, but he's got a gantry crane to put in his shop.

looks like one more overly complicated thing to waste time and money repairing when something breaks

Interesting to say the least. If my old engineer brain is working, with the pulley arrangement it would have a capacity to lift 12,000 lb. Yes?

    Oh good...
Cuz the ones we've used for the last few decades don't work very good.

  24. those cranes are cool.
this crane solves the "low" issue and doubles as a way to move skids. IMG_1420.JPG IMG_1421.JPG

3000 lb capacity is reached with one wrap on the drum, with each additional wrap, capacity is reduced, not that the rest of the build looks like it will support a ton and a half. also, most winches of this kind do not have a brake, that is to say when using it to lower the object, it might free spool and hit the ground hard.

reminds me of a TV show with Tim Allen and Richard Karn, of "Tool Time" fame, that had contestants create something mechanical according general parameters of show. Some extreme, some way off base. everyone sees different approaches to a challenge
